MSAD Residential Educator-Intermittent

The Minnesota State Academies (MSAD) is seeking an Interim Human Services Technician (HST) to contribute to the design and delivery of instructional programs to deaf/hard of hearing or deaf/blind students. This position involves providing educational instruction and using various techniques to encourage appropriate behaviors.
Positions at the MSAD require American Sign Language (ASL) skills. Candidates will be assessed for signing skills prior to hire.
Responsibilities
- Contributes to the design and delivery of instructional programs to deaf/hard of hearing or deaf/blind students.
- Provides educational instruction and uses a variety of techniques to encourage appropriate behaviors.
- Assists with daily living activities and ensures safety and security of students.
- Maintains accurate records and documentation.
- Collaborates with other staff members to ensure the smooth operation of the dormitory.
Requirements
- A passing score on a valid and reliable formal assessment (Parapro or Paraeducator) demonstrating the knowledge and ability to assist with instruction in reading/language, writing, mathematics or readiness for each.
- The ability to read and write English sufficient to understand and follow directions and to maintain records and documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate in conversational sign language (to be assessed prior to offer of hire).
- Human relations skills sufficient to establish rapport with and provide direction to residential students.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs with assistance.
- Ability to walk/stand for at least eight hours.
Skills
- Knowledge or experience working with students in an educational and/or dormitory setting or in a similar setting as a caregiver.
- Advanced ASL Skills.
- Previous experience/background working with deaf/hard of hearing students.
- Demonstrated knowledge in therapeutic intervention, first aid/CPR.
