Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the design and delivery of academic instructional programs to deaf/hard of hearing or deaf/blind students.
  • Provides educational instruction and uses a variety of techniques to encourage appropriate behaviors.
  • Candidates will be assessed for signing skills prior to hire.

Requirements

  • At least two years of college credits (usually 60 credits in Minnesota) through an accredited institution of higher education; or an associate’s or higher degree;
  • A passing score on a valid and reliable formal assessment (Parapro or Paraeducator) demonstrating the knowledge and ability to assist with instruction in reading/language, writing, mathematics or readiness for each;
  • Knowledge of the deaf/hard of hearing and deaf/blind students and their educational practices;
  • Fluency in American Sign Language;
  • Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand written policies, procedures, and education plans and to maintain records and documentation;
  • Human relations skills sufficient to establish rapport with and provide instruction to students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with deaf/hard of hearing students;
  • Demonstration of advanced sign language;

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (with assistance) and be able to sit, stand and walk throughout the day.

Additional Requirements

  • Employment is contingent upon a successful criminal background check within the past 12 months.
