About the role
We are currently searching for an MRI Technician to provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).
Responsibilities
- We conduct Magnetic Resonance (MR) safety screening of human subjects.
- We collect Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) brain images, functional MRI images and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS).
- We perform regular quality assurance procedures on MRI scanner and instruments.
- We ensure that studies are conducted in compliance with NIH standards and regulations.
- We train research staff and other staff on scanner operation.
- We work with staff to design and modify research protocols; optimize MRI/ MRS protocols.
- We provide input on modifications of scanner to produce optimum image spectra and most efficient use of scanner.
- We perform duties such as intravenous injection of MRI contrast agents and flushing vascular access devices according to the study protocol; perform venipuncture on infants, children and adults utilizing angiocaths, quick-catheters and butterfly needles per physician orders for injection of contract media.
- We collect and archive MRI/ MRS data.
- We collect, manage and analyze prepared data generated by experiments in laboratory animals.
- We conduct clinical and research MRI procedures on patients and animals, including standard clinical and more specialized MRI procedures such as functional MRI, diffusion MRI, MRS, or animal scans.
- We set up all MRI-specific equipment and matrix camera, coils and display equipment for functional imaging; operate the controls console during scanning, including selecting proper imaging sequence.
- We execute research projects focusing on reproducibility and quality assurance of different pulse sequences and activation paradigms with the assistance of an MR physicist.
- We transfer both raw and post-processed images and data to specified databases and/ or secure storage media secure external hard drives and/ or DVDs, where they can be stored safely.
- We adhere to safety precautions and procedures that effect the MRI Facility such as ensuring that all research participants, patients and visitors are free of metal objects, are screened for MRI contraindications, etc.
- We monitor and maintain the MRI study participant schedule on a day-to-day and weekly basis; inform the researchers of any open scanner slots and adjust the schedule to ensure efficient, optimal use of the scanner.
- We work with research fellows to assist development of new research protocols.
- We identify equipment malfunctions and notify appropriate personnel in case of malfunctions; schedule and/ or perform routine equipment maintenance functions.
Requirements
- We have certification from the American Registry of Radiology Technology (ARRT), or similar accreditation entity, in an MRI Technology program with a focus in medical imaging.
- We have at least FOUR (4) years of MRI Imaging experience.
- We are knowledgeable in standard MRI safety protocols and procedures.
- We must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD “public trust”; candidates must receive approved adjudication prior to onboarding with Guidehouse.
Qualifications
- A Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience working with human and/or animal subjects is beneficial.
- Experience in training researchers or other technologists on equipment will be useful.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite.
- We work collaboratively with the Principal Investigator, research team, and other resources.
- Strong attention to detail.
Skills

- Experience conducting MRI and MRS scans and analyzing the results.

Benefits
The annual salary range for this position is $74,000.00-$124,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
