Distinguishing Characteristics

The distinguishing feature of this class is the job requirement of driving skills in the operation of a variety of motor vehicles, as is indicated by possession of appropriate licenses. Motor Vehicle Operators are involved on a full-time basis in the operation of any vehicle, except a tractor trailer, the operation of which is authorized by possession of a valid CDL Class B, Class C, or General Class D New York State Driver’s License. Tractor Trailer Operator: Drives tractor trailers full-time on over-the-road and frequently multi-day trips. Requires CDL Class A license. Tandem Tractor Trailer Operator: Drives tandem tractor trailers primarily on over-the-road and multi-day trips. Requires CDL Class A license and meets NYS Thruway Authority tandem trailer requirements. Senior Chauffeur: Primarily drives State-owned automobiles to personally transport high-level State executives on official business. Operations Assistant 1, Facility Operations Assistant 1 (Grounds), Highway Equipment Operator, Construction Equipment Operator, Crane and Shovel Operator: Operate power-driven mechanical equipment used in maintenance and repair of highways, canals, and grounds. Positions involved in security, clerical mail/supply work, building trades, groundskeeping, and maintenance may drive motor vehicles as part of broader job duties.

Illustrative Duties

• Drives a variety of motor vehicles both on and off State property to transport people, materials, and equipment
• Plows snow from roadways and parking lots
• Makes maps of routes, itineraries, and points of call
• Moves or carries cargo onto, into, off of, or out of the vehicle
• Transfers cargo from vehicle to delivery or storage points
• Posts manifests, inventories, and records of goods and people transported
• Performs routine maintenance on vehicles to ensure operational readiness
• Changes oil, spark plugs, and tires
• Washes vehicles and performs basic upkeep
• Refuels vehicles and checks fluid levels (radiator, oil, air, etc.)
• Replaces lamp bulbs

Qualifications

• Candidates must possess a New York State Driver’s License appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
• Candidates may be required to possess a CDL Class A, B, C or General Class D license.
