Motor Vehicle Operator
This position is located in the VA Black Hills Health Care System (VA BHHCS) Transportation Network in Fort Meade, SD.
Qualifications
Driver's License Requirement: This position requires a current, valid state driver's license. If an interview is requested, you may be required to provide a copy of your current, valid, and unrestricted state driver's license.
Physical Effort and Work Conditions
- Requires a strong physique and good stamina with normal visual acuity, including normal field of vision, depth perception, reaction time, night vision, and good hearing.
- Must lift, pull, and carry heavy weights and objects (up to 150 pounds) in loading and unloading cargo.
- Performs duties requiring heavy muscular effort, such as changing truck tires.
- Assists with patient transfers from vehicles to and from the curb, including occasional litter transfers.
- Requires reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs, as well as extended periods of sitting.
- Works outside in both summer and winter, occasionally exposed to bad weather conditions while loading and unloading vehicles.
- Drives in all types of traffic and weather, exposed to the possibility of serious accidents.
- Subject to cuts, bruises, and broken bones due to accidents while driving or loading/unloading vehicles.
- Potential exposure to extreme noise, contaminated waste, acid/base materials, asbestos, known carcinogens, and other chemicals.
- Subject to call-back for emergency trips and snow removal.
- Subject to mental fatigue due to stress.
Applicants will be rated based on the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications using the job element method. Your knowledge, skills, and abilities will be compared to the required job elements for success. A full year of work is considered 35-40 hours per week. All experience must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited based on actual hours spent in appropriate activities.
Experience: Includes paid and unpaid experience, such as volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and skills.
Responsibilities
- Transports patients, visitors, and consultants to and from airports, bus depots, alternate care sites, and other designated destinations.
- Assists in the loading and unloading of patients and responds to all non-medical needs during transport.
- Transports medical records, sensitive materials, and lab specimens in compliance with patient privacy and hazardous material transport regulations.
- Picks up and/or delivers supplies/equipment and provides logistical support for the VA BHHCS Transportation Network.
- Assists in operating snow removal and lawn care equipment, completing grounds maintenance tasks, vehicle and equipment preventive maintenance (PMs) and repairs, and shop area clean-up as assigned.
- Operates transport vehicles, including passenger vans with vehicle lifts, vans, pick-up trucks, sedans, and emergency transport vehicles equipped to accommodate a stretcher and oxygen.
- Operates and is competent with all snow removal and grounds equipment.
- Performs regular preventive maintenance on vehicles, lubricates equipment and attachments, and makes minor and emergency repairs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Schedule
- Monday-Friday, 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM and 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing-designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
