About the role

The City of Pittsfield’s Department of Public Services is seeking a qualified Motor Equipment Repair Person to perform skilled work servicing and repairing a wide variety of automotive vehicles and motorized equipment. The candidate must provide and maintain a complete set of standard heavy-equipment repair tools and wrenches. This position may require work outside of regular repair hours to support weather-related City operations or other emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and troubleshoot gasoline and diesel internal-combustion engine powered vehicles and equipment, including air compressors, vehicle and equipment hydraulic systems, generators, and pump drives.
  • Perform repairs such as engine tune-ups and overhauls, electrical-system repairs, brake and clutch adjustments, carburetor repairs, front-end alignment, replacement of engine components, valve and brake-drum grinding, body-panel replacement or repair and painting, and related welding and metal work.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance: lubrication, oil and filter changes, antifreeze checks, etc.
  • Fabricate and modify equipment by installing brackets, racks, and other custom components.
  • Test-drive vehicles and equipment to diagnose issues and verify completed repairs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License.
  • Two years of full-time experience repairing and maintaining automotive engines and vehicle or equipment components.
  • Thorough knowledge of motor-equipment repair tools, diagnostic equipment, and techniques.
  • Working familiarity with welding equipment and techniques.
  • Ability to interact positively and professionally with the public, officials, and colleagues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Valid Hydraulic Engineer licenses 1C, 2A, 3A, and 4E.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent public interaction with residents, government officials, staff, boards, and third-party vendors.
  • Regular outdoor work in all weather conditions and extremes.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to operate all machines, devices, and tools used in motor-equipment repair.
  • Versatility and agility to climb under, over, and around vehicles and equipment.
  • Physical strength to lift 50 lbs from floor to chest height.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM (40 hours per week).

Pay

Starting rate $23.75/hour with annual increases up to $32.87/hour.
