About the role
The Town of Acton is seeking an experienced and skilled Equipment Repair Person to join our Department of Public Works. This full-time position performs skilled mechanical work diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining the Town's diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment while also supporting Public Works operations and emergency response.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose, maintain, and repair Town vehicles and equipment, including cars, police and fire vehicles, pickup and dump trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, lawn and grounds equipment, and other light and heavy equipment
- Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues
- Perform preventive maintenance and inspections
- Repair gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles
- Service hydraulic and air brake systems
- Repair engines, suspensions, transmissions, fuel and electrical systems
- Perform welding and fabrication
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and perform field repairs
- Maintain repair and maintenance records
- Operate heavy equipment and assist with road, drainage, infrastructure, winter maintenance, and other Public Works activities as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience in automotive mechanics involving mechanical and electrical work on cars, trucks, heavy equipment, gasoline and diesel engines, and hydraulics; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience
- Valid driver's license required
- Must possess CDL Class A with air brake endorsement, Massachusetts Hoisting License Class 2A or greater, Massachusetts Hoisting License Class 1D (forklift), and OSHA-10 certification, or be able to obtain the required licenses and certifications within one (1) year or by the next available testing period, whichever comes first
Preferred Qualifications
- Welding and fabrication experience
- OSHA Excavation Competent Person certification
- Experience with Public Works operations and construction
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Significant physical activity, including heavy lifting that may exceed 100 pounds
- Work in both a mechanical repair shop and outdoor environments
- Must be available for emergency response, including winter maintenance
Pay
Grade A7, starting $31.0219/hr.
