About the role
The City of Auburn Department of Public Works is seeking a dependable, safety-minded Motor Equipment Operator (MEO) to maintain the City's streets, parks, public facilities, infrastructure, and grounds. The position involves operating a variety of trucks, heavy equipment, and specialized municipal machinery while performing hands-on Public Works duties.
Responsibilities
- Operate a variety of trucks, heavy equipment, and municipal machinery as assigned, including loaders, backhoes, excavators, tractors, mowers, sweepers, and other equipment.
- Perform snow and ice removal operations, including operating plow trucks, loaders, and other snow removal equipment.
- Perform street and roadway maintenance, including pothole repair, patching, grading, and related work.
- Assist with the maintenance and repair of City streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, and other public infrastructure.
- Perform excavation, hauling, loading, material handling, and site preparation work.
- Assist with the maintenance of City parks, grounds, buildings, facilities, and other municipal properties.
- Perform seasonal work including brush removal, mowing, landscaping, cleanup, and other related activities.
- Assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of signs, barricades, traffic control devices, and other municipal equipment.
- Perform manual labor duties including shoveling, raking, digging, lifting, sweeping, and other physically demanding tasks.
- Perform routine inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment and report mechanical or safety concerns.
- Maintain assigned vehicles, equipment, tools, and work areas in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
- Follow established work assignments, schedules, safety procedures, and departmental policies.
- Work safely around moving vehicles, heavy equipment, traffic, construction activities, and the general public.
- Respond to emergency situations, severe weather events, and other operational needs as directed.
- Assist other divisions and crews within the Department of Public Works as assigned.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions throughout the year.
- Maintain a professional and courteous relationship with City residents and the general public.
- Work as part of a dedicated team providing essential services to the City of Auburn.
Requirements
- Valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Safe driving record.
- Experience operating heavy trucks, construction equipment, or municipal equipment preferred.
- Previous experience in public works, construction, road maintenance, landscaping, or a related field is a plus.
- Ability to safely operate trucks, heavy equipment, and other municipal machinery.
- Ability to learn and safely operate a variety of equipment and tools.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including walking, lifting, carrying, bending, shoveling, digging, and working around heavy equipment.
- Ability to work safely in and around traffic, construction areas, work zones, and other potentially hazardous environments.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and other conditions.
- Ability to follow directions, work assignments, safety procedures, and departmental policies.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety, teamwork, and public service.
- Willingness to perform overtime, emergency work, snow and ice operations, or other departmental assignments when required.
- Professional and courteous interaction with residents, coworkers, contractors, and the general public.
Residency Requirement
All employees must reside within 35 miles of the City of Auburn corporate boundary.
