PURPOSE OF POSITION

To perform various manual labor tasks associated with highway maintenance activities and operate heavy equipment to provide the public with safe, well-maintained, and efficient roadways at all times.

WORK PERFORMED/JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Hauling aggregate materials to designated roadways
  • Performing snowplowing and sanding/salting of ice-covered roadways
  • Repairing roadway surfaces by fixing sand pockets and soft spots in gravel roads
  • Removing culvert obstructions, steaming frozen culverts
  • Clearing rights-of-way
  • Clearing roadways of storm debris, removing trees and brush obstructing roadway visibility
  • Performing ditch work to ensure proper drainage
  • Crack sealing, patching or repairing potholes/breakups on asphalt roadways
  • Repairing gravel shoulders along asphalt roadways
  • Repairing washout areas, when necessary
  • Performing basic equipment maintenance (i.e. performing oil changes, grease jobs, tire repairs, replacement of hoses, bolts, lights, changing cutting edges, etc.)
  • Affixing roadway signs
  • Maintaining time records for use by department office personnel to determine payroll, accounts receivable, inventory, cost for road maintenance, etc.
  • Performing other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • A good understanding of highway maintenance and construction practices
  • The ability to operate heavy equipment (i.e. snow plow/dump truck, motor grader, and periodically light equipment (i.e. loader/backhoe, tracked skid steer, etc.))
  • The ability to follow directions and work without direct supervision
  • The ability to perform physical work safely and efficiently
  • The ability to be mechanically inclined and have the physical/mental attributes necessary to perform work in a satisfactory manner during adverse conditions
  • The ability to tactfully deal with the public, when necessary

MINIMUM TRAINING, EXPERIENCE OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • A high school degree or its equivalent
  • Two to four years’ experience in highway maintenance activities
  • A valid Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) endorsement
  • A valid Driver’s License

PHYSICAL EFFORT

  • Light to medium physical activities requiring climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, feeling, talking, hearing, near and far acuity, depth perception, and color vision
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Work in the field will include exposure to weather, proximity to moving, mechanical parts, vibration, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, confined/restricted areas, and working in high, exposed places as well as inside work in a shop setting

HOURLY RANGE

$29.32 - $38.51
