About the role
The MOT Equipment Mechanic position is responsible for maintaining Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) equipment, including Message Boards, Arrow Boards, Speed Radar Boards, Portable Regulatory Boards, and utility trailers. This role requires 12 Volt diagnostic ability with CPU, PCB, Solar Regulatory Chargers, and Character Panel wiring. Familiarity with Series and Parallel electrical circuits in relation to battery configurations is essential. Welding/fabrication ability and an understanding of basic hydraulic motor and cylinder functions are also required. We provide training for the specific equipment used by our company.
Responsibilities
- Work on small equipment and trailers.
- Determine equipment condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests; identifying worn and damaged parts.
- Keep equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules; installing component and part upgrades; and general maintenance of trailers.
- Correct equipment deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, and components.
- Verify equipment performance by conducting tests and adjusting controls and systems.
- Maintain equipment appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting.
- Maintain equipment records by annotating services and repairs.
- Keep shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs; evaluating service and parts options.
- Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Valid driver's license required; will require passing MVR and controlled substance test, may require background and criminal record check.
- Knowledge of local driving rules and regulations.
- Repeated physical effort including:
- Driving for several hours per day or several hours at a time.
- Standing and walking for extended periods (more than several hours).
- Loading and unloading equipment into and out of company vehicles.
- Walking on varying ground surfaces.
- Frequently lifting a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Working from elevated platforms, ladders, or truck beds.
- Operating hand/power tools; manual dexterity to operate keyboards and smartphones; physical agility to use arms, legs, and hands repetitively.
- Working outdoors, safely under adverse environmental and weather conditions, including high-speed traffic areas, heavy construction equipment, fuel fumes, and construction substances.
- Comfortable around vehicles moving through work zones and maintaining constant awareness of surroundings on construction sites, including placement of machinery and equipment, other employees, and construction activities.
- Vision adequate to see moving vehicles, read highway construction MOT signs, instructions, manuals, reports, and construction plans.
- Hearing adequate to hear approaching vehicles, audible commands at a distance from supervisors, conversations in person, and over the telephone.
- Communicate clearly—both written and verbally; ability to complete daily paperwork as required by supervisor.
- Work a flexible schedule which can include day or night shifts, weekends and/or holidays, adjusting to a changing work schedule, working overtime, and working individually and as a team with other employees.
- Maintain company standards post-employment for background checks, criminal record, driving record, and controlled substance/drug testing.
- Applicant must speak and understand English.
Qualifications
- Trailer mechanical repair experience a plus.
- Electrical and welding experience a plus.
- 2-4 years of preventative maintenance of trailers a plus.
- Battery charging and testing experience a plus.
