About the role
The Mortgage Underwriter at Nicolet National Bank is responsible for preparing, processing, and underwriting mortgage loan files. This role involves evaluating secondary market applications, approving or rejecting loan applications based on findings, and communicating underwriting conditions to lenders and processors.
Responsibilities
- Independently screen loan applications to determine loan eligibility by analyzing personal financial data and other relevant information.
- Approve or reject loan applications based on the Mortgage Underwriter's findings and, when necessary, propose alternative loan structures or products.
- Prepare written confirmation of findings, including system coding, denial notices, HMDA coding, and uploads into Director record-keeping systems.
- Exercise discretion and independent judgment to assess loan quality and ensure compliance with specific guidelines and investor overlays.
- Establish underwriting conditions needed to clear loans to close and communicate these conditions to lenders and processors.
- Work as a liaison between investors and lenders on loan products that Nicolet cannot approve, clearing file pends from investors and third-party audit companies.
- Assist the Underwriting Manager with training new and existing employees on accurate data input for applications to reduce potential negative impacts on borrowers and Nicolet.
- Answer phone inquiries from lenders, staff, and customers to resolve issues and ensure customer satisfaction.
- Interpret guideline changes for different loan products and varying overlays of investors and communicate this information concisely to frontline staff.
- Attend webinars, review ALLREGS, and participate in investor seminars to stay current with underwriting and investor guidelines.
- Coordinate productive, informative retail meetings with the Underwriting Manager to assist frontline in meeting Nicolet's goals and customer expectations.
Qualifications
- A High School Diploma or equivalent.
- An Associate Degree in Administration or Finance-Related field of study.
- 1-3 years required mortgage processing or underwriting experience.
- 3+ years preferred mortgage processing or underwriting experience.
- Proficiency with computer, phone system, and general office equipment.
- Ability to learn and become proficient with Microsoft Office suite and other mortgage-specific software applications.
- Highly developed attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to prioritize and work rapidly and accurately in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Knowledge of mortgage processing, underwriting, and secondary market functions.
