General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems. We are seeking an Associate Engineer I with an interest in modeling and simulation to join our Strategic Analysis and Operations team in San Diego, CA.

About the role

In this role, you’ll support the development and application of simulation tools to explore and validate how advanced unmanned systems and military aircraft perform in complex missions. Working with radar, infrared, electro-optical sensors, and other related mission-critical technologies, you’ll help develop custom algorithms and extensions to enhance simulation capabilities. You’ll contribute to transforming system ideas into cutting-edge concepts that support real-world defense goals while building foundational skills in modeling and simulation.

Responsibilities

  • Support modeling and simulation efforts for military aircraft projects, analyzing mission effectiveness and system performance
  • Build and run simulations using tools such as AFSIM and Command Professional Edition (CPE) to model mission scenarios across air, land, sea, and space domains
  • Assist in developing and implementing custom algorithms to extend and enhance simulation capabilities in AFSIM and CPE
  • Translate system requirements and operational concepts into reusable models and simulation logic
  • Analyze performance of platforms, sensors, communications, weapons, and autonomous functions in realistic threat environments
  • Help design and code custom behaviors, plugins, and extensions to tailor simulation environments to specific mission needs
  • Work with engineering teams to assess new capabilities, test ideas, and support decision-making
  • Create and deliver reports, visualizations, and presentations for technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Contribute to research efforts and proposal development for internal and external customers

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Familiarity with Modeling and Simulation concepts and tools (through coursework, projects, or internships)
  • Exposure to or coursework in Radar Technology, Signal Processing, Infrared Systems, and/or Electro-Optical Systems
  • Basic programming skills in one or more languages (MATLAB, Python, C++, or similar)
  • Ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately in an evolving environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to document findings and communicate results to engineering staff
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Internship or project experience with defense systems or mission systems
  • Hands-on experience with simulation environments (AFSIM, STK, Command PE, or similar)
  • Knowledge of military aircraft operations, unmanned systems, or multi-domain operations
  • Experience developing algorithms or coding extensions for simulation tools
  • Experience handling large datasets
  • Understanding of military CONOPS or contested operations
  • Background in software development practices including version control (Git), testing, and documentation
  • Familiarity with LLMs and AI model usage
