Job Summary
The Model Maker is responsible for ensuring products are built correctly by analyzing technical requirements and design specifications throughout the development process. This hands-on role designs and develops test plans, test cases, and test procedures to validate that functional prototypes, appearance models, and test fixtures meet defined performance and quality benchmarks. The Model Maker identifies and reports defects, tracks issues through to resolution, and collaborates closely with engineering, industrial design, and laboratory teams from concept development through final validation.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure products are being built correctly by analyzing technical requirements and design specifications
- Design and develop test plans, test cases, and test steps for prototypes and assemblies
- Validate functional requirements and benchmark current system performance against design intent
- Identify, document, and report defects and performance issues discovered during build and testing phases
- Track defects through resolution in collaboration with cross-functional teams
- Support product validation activities to confirm readiness for design decisions and production release
- Document test results and communicate findings to engineering and design teams
- Build functional and appearance prototypes from CAD models and engineering drawings
- Operate manual machining equipment including mills, lathes, and secondary tools
- Perform MIG and TIG welding for prototype assemblies and test fixtures
- Operate and maintain additive manufacturing equipment (FDM 3D printing)
- Apply coatings, paint, and surface finishes to meet design and CMF requirements
- Design and fabricate lab test fixtures, rigs, and prototype tooling
- Interpret technical drawings, specifications, and engineering requirements
- Collaborate with engineering, industrial design, and lab teams throughout the development process
- Contribute to design reviews by identifying fabrication risks and validation concerns early
- Ensure accuracy, quality, and consistency in all prototype builds and deliverables
- Maintain equipment, tools, and work environment in safe and operational condition
- Contribute to continuous improvement of model shop processes, tools, and techniques
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or trade school education preferred
- Relevant experience in model making, fabrication, or prototype development
- Experience working with metals, plastics, aluminum extrusions, and other fabrication materials
- Prior experience with test plan development or structured verification activities a plus
- Proficiency in conventional machining (milling, turning, drilling)
- MIG and TIG welding capability
- Experience with 3D printing and rapid prototyping methods
- Able to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints
- Basic CAD proficiency (e.g., SolidWorks)
- Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on problem-solving skills
- Ability to apply math concepts including geometry, trigonometry, and basic industrial math
Core Competencies
- Analytical thinking – ability to evaluate technical requirements and identify gaps
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Structured problem solving and defect tracking
- Collaboration and teamwork across engineering, design, and lab functions
- Adaptability and flexibility in a fast-paced development environment
- Clear verbal and written communication
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Frequent use of hands and tools in a manufacturing/shop environment
- Regular standing, lifting, and movement of materials (up to 50 lbs.; occasional lifts up to 100 lbs. with assistance)
- Exposure to standard shop equipment, mechanical systems, and moderate noise levels
- Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE): safety glasses, steel-toed footwear, hearing protection in designated areas
