Model-Based Systems Engineer (R&D Engineer 1/2)

This position is open for external candidates only and will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1 or R&D Engineer 2 level, depending on the selected candidate’s skills. Additional responsibilities will apply if hired at the higher level.

About the Role

Join the Mission Concepts Group (E-2) as a Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) on the Risk and Systems Engineering team. In this role, you will contribute to the development and advancement of future weapons systems and help maintain legacy programs. You will develop MBSE models to support urgent warfighter requirements, facilitating agile and responsive operations.

E-2 addresses emerging national security challenges by providing:

• Risk management and systems engineering solutions to Congressional Line-Item projects, managing cost and schedule constraints while ensuring requirements verification.
• Novel optimization software to simulate multiscale multiphysics engineering and materials science applications for autonomous design.
• Additive manufacturing research and development in materials, sensor embedment, and mechanical design.

Responsibilities

• Develop MBSE models to support warfighter requirements and legacy program maintenance.
• Analyze existing and approved requirements documentation.
• Support management of models and derived work products in accordance with project configuration and data management processes.
• Conduct walkthroughs and formal reviews of system requirements and architecture models (R&D Engineer 2 level).
• Perform detailed technical analyses of subsystems and system elements (R&D Engineer 2 level).
• Provide peer review of work products across organizations and technical disciplines (R&D Engineer 2 level).
• Mentor junior staff and peers in technical and professional growth (R&D Engineer 2 level).

Requirements

R&D Engineer 1 ($96,600 - $158,000)

• Technical Expertise:
  • Familiarity with nuclear weapons development and design.
  • Experience with one or more phases of the R&D product lifecycle, including requirements generation, validation and verification (V&V), prototyping, and testing.
  • Ability to analyze existing and approved requirements documentation.
  • Experience supporting management of models and derived work products in accordance with project configuration and data management processes.
• Communication & Teamwork:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey complex technical information clearly.
  • Experience working effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

R&D Engineer 2 ($106,400 - $176,000)

In addition to the R&D Engineer 1 requirements, the R&D Engineer 2 level includes:

• Technical Expertise:
  • Experience with the full R&D product lifecycle, including requirements generation, V&V, prototyping, and testing.
  • Coursework or practical experience in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), including system model creation, usage, maintenance, execution, and analysis.
  • Experience conducting walkthroughs and formal reviews of system requirements and architecture models developed using MBSE processes.
  • Ability to perform detailed technical analyses of subsystems and system elements.
• Communication & Teamwork:
  • Provides peer review of work products across organizations and technical disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor junior staff and peers in technical and professional growth.

Qualifications

• R&D Engineer 1: Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution with 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience.
• R&D Engineer 2: Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution with 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills

Desired (not required) skills that may strengthen an application:

• Active DOE Q clearance.
• Experience interfacing with Department of War industry partners.
• Expertise with Cameo, MagicDraw, and/or Rhapsody (Cameo preferred) for developing models of system requirements, architecture/design, and interfaces.
• Ability to train others on MBSE concepts and tools, and provide guidance on development and test strategies.

Schedule

This is a regular, full-time position with a 1-year commitment. Employees must serve this period before applying for other internal roles without documented approval from their Division Leader.

Work Location

This position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. Work location is at the discretion of management.
