Mobile MRI Technologist
About the Role
As a Mobile MR Technologist, you will travel with the mobile MR truck and assist physicians in performing diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures. Your role involves preparing patients and safely operating MR equipment to obtain diagnostic scans.
Responsibilities
- Safety:
- Corroborate patient’s identification and clinical history with procedure and ensure information is documented.
- Verify informed consent for applicable procedures.
- Perform screening processes for medication reconciliation and allergy confirmation.
- Identify and respond to emergency situations.
- Perform ongoing quality assurance activities.
- Apply principles of safety, proper body mechanics, and infection control precautions during patient care.
- Comply with organization and department policies, protocols, and procedures.
- Imaging:
- Receive, relay, and document verbal, written, and electronic orders.
- Prepare patients for procedures and address their needs during the procedure.
- Demonstrate understanding of human anatomy, pathology, physiology, and medical terminology.
- Modify care according to patient’s age, condition, and abilities.
- Follow protocols established by licensed practitioners to optimize technical factors while maximizing patient safety.
- Maintain a high degree of accuracy in positioning.
- Identify, prepare, and administer medications, including contrast media, as prescribed.
- Perform venipuncture as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
- Evaluate images for technical quality and ensure proper recording of patient identification and anatomical laterality.
- Ensure accurate and complete examinations are performed.
- Ensure timely review and transfer of images and pertinent clinical information to a licensed practitioner.
- Operate electronic medical record (EMR), radiology information system (RIS), and picture archiving and communication system (PACS).
- Patient Care:
- Provide care for patients during procedures.
- Apply principles of safety, proper body mechanics, and infection control precautions.

- Perform ongoing quality assurance activities.
- Maintain department-specific annual competency checklists.
- Maintain certification and registration with credentialing organizations such as:
- American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
- American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)
- Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB)
- American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety (ABMRS)
- Maintain applicable state license.
- Professional Development:
- Educate and monitor students and other healthcare providers.
- Share knowledge and expertise with colleagues, peers, and the healthcare team.
- For All MR Technologists:
- Properly operate MR scanners.
- Select appropriate pulse sequences considering established protocols and influencing factors.
- Select appropriate coils to produce required images.
- Conduct screening interviews to ensure a safe environment.
- Identify contraindications to entering the MR environment and restrict access.
- Maintain safe air temperature and notify appropriate personnel when needed.
- Ensure safe cryogen levels and notify appropriate personnel when needed.
- Know emergency shutdown procedures.
- Apply principles of MR safety to minimize risk to patients, self, and others.
- Report MR safety-related issues to manager/supervisor.
- Assist licensed practitioners with interventional MR procedures.
- Perform MR procedures for diagnostic interpretation or therapeutic intervention as prescribed.
- Additional Functions for Mobile MR Technologist:
- Properly pack and unpack mobile MR equipment before and after transportation.
- Ensure secure storage of all equipment before and after transportation.
- Confirm all connectivity before daily operations.
- Perform quality control tests as applicable.
- Orient to site to ensure protocols are followed.
- Know emergency operations for transport stretchers, lifts, and doors for each mobile MR.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Graduate of ARRT-approved Radiography Program or MR Program required; 2-year/Associate Degree preferred.
- Minimum of one year of experience in MR required.
- Certified and registered by ARRT in MR – RT(R)(MR) or RT(MR) required.
- IV credential required.
- Applicable state license required.
Skills
- Well-versed in MRI safety issues, including medical prosthetics, implants, and general magnet care and safety.
- Ensure patient safety, including pre-screening.
- Effective communication with customers and radiologists.
- Capable of troubleshooting the scanner, coils, and peripheral equipment to ensure high-quality MRI studies.
- Ability to train and mentor new technologists and Radiology Operations Assistants.
- Flexibility with schedule changes; travel is regularly required.
- Thorough knowledge of MRI imaging equipment, analytical ability, and basic computer skills.
- Ability to interpret information to identify each patient’s care requirements relative to age-specific needs.
- Good communication skills.
