Description Summary
Performs clinical testing in assigned sections such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology sections, with duties including quality control, performance improvement, proficiency testing, and preventative maintenance of equipment. Recognizes abnormal critical values and follows guidelines for notifying medical team members. Performs clerical, general, and phlebotomy duties, and provides/dispenses blood products.
Responsibilities
- Maintains accuracy and timeliness of results through specimen collection, handling, and processing.
- Reports critical values and performs tests in various sections including Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology.
- Ensures proper operation of laboratory equipment and maintains inventory of supplies and reagents.
- Participates in Quality Control and Performance Improvement activities, and documents findings.
- Trains new associates and students in laboratory practices.
- Adheres to regulatory standards and maintains safety protocols.
- Utilizes LIS and HIS systems to report and charge laboratory results.
Requirements
- OR Associates Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent training/experience.
- Laboratory training including completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved by NAACLS or other organizations approved by HHS.
- At least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.
- No experience required for graduates of approved programs.
- Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including rotations through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Hematology sections.
Skills
- Knowledge of CLIA, CAP, AABB, JCAHO guidelines.
- Ability to operate laboratory equipment and troubleshoot minor issues.
- Proficiency in LIS and HIS systems.
- Good communication and customer service skills.
