About the role

Tennessee Oncology, one of the nation’s largest community-based cancer care specialists, is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician to support our mission of providing access to high-quality cancer care and clinical research within the community. This role is responsible for the collection of patient specimens for laboratory testing and ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain laboratory procedures, equipment, and processes to aid in diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
  • Ensure all lab reports are reviewed and appropriate values are noted.
  • Follow proper guidelines for safe handling of blood, body fluids, and hazardous chemicals.
  • Perform laboratory testing and operate automated equipment within the limits described in the procedure manual.
  • Maintain proper records of laboratory testing and results as described in the policy and procedures manual.
  • Adhere to CLIA compliance requirements.
  • Perform quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of clinical data.
  • Interact with medical staff and assist physicians with procedures and exams as requested.
  • Maintain sufficient inventory of laboratory supplies for daily operations.
  • Understand and utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS), including ordering tests, rejecting tests, reviewing, and approving results.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and take corrective action or notify the Director/Manager immediately.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.

Requirements

  • Current State of Tennessee Medical Laboratory Technician/Technologist License required.
  • Hematology experience with a minimum of 1 year of laboratory experience preferred.
  • Excellent phlebotomy skills.
  • Associate Degree in Applied Sciences, Medical Laboratory Technology, or Bachelor Degree in Medical Technology required.
  • Outpatient facility experience preferred.

Skills

  • Ability to perform clean venipuncture and capillary collections.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices.
  • Understanding of proper quality control procedures, use of control materials, and documentation of QC results and corrective action.
  • Knowledge of ongoing quality assurance activities and documentation of breaches of quality.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance on automated equipment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to take direction and effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Ability to build rapport with patients to deliver exceptional direct patient care.
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure.
  • Patient service-oriented.
