About the Role

As an MLS Trainee Student Worker, you will participate in Labcorp’s 2026-2027 Medical Laboratory Science Training Program. This role offers the opportunity to rotate through hospital and non-hospital laboratory settings while learning the theory behind medical laboratory practices. Didactic instruction will be provided virtually, and clinical instruction will take place in-person at clinical base or affiliate locations. You will support meaningful work that complements an education in STEM, business, and healthcare disciplines, contributing to our mission of improving health and lives globally.

In addition to didactic and clinical instruction, you will engage in professional development through workshops, leadership speakers, employee resource groups, and panel discussions. The program supports your scientific and professional career aspirations, preparing you for diverse responsibilities in analysis, clinical decision-making, regulatory compliance, education, and quality assurance. Upon completion, you will receive a certificate and be prepared to take a national certification examination (pending NAACLS program accreditation approval).

Student Workers will be based in Phoenix, AZ; Birmingham, AL; or Indianapolis, IN. Trainees in Phoenix, Birmingham, and Indianapolis will train in Core laboratory environments, while those in Indianapolis will also train in Central Laboratory settings. Hospital laboratory rotations will cover areas not addressed in Core or Central laboratories.

Responsibilities

• Attend didactic lectures and successfully complete all coursework and related materials in the following content areas:
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Hematology
  • Urinalysis & Body Fluids
  • Immunohematology
  • Immunology & Molecular Methods
  • Clinical Microbiology
  • Laboratory Operations Management and Education
• Successfully complete clinical rotations and related assignments in the following areas:
  • Phlebotomy
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Hematology
  • Urinalysis & Body Fluids
  • Immunohematology
  • Immunology & Molecular Methods
  • Clinical Microbiology
• Demonstrate competency in course materials by obtaining at least a 70% on each course examination and an overall course grade of 76% or greater.
• Complete all assigned supplemental assignments and attend study sessions in preparation for the national certification examination.
• Engage in professional development workshops and modules to enhance business acumen and professional presence.
• During paid work hours (voluntary, up to 20 hours per week unless approved by the Program Director), assist with and perform duties related to testing, recording data, and releasing results under the supervision of a qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist. Note: Students are not allowed to independently release patient results.
• Perform assigned clinical laboratory testing accurately and in a timely manner according to established procedures under the technical oversight of a qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist.
• Perform accurate and timely result entry (via auto-verification and manual entry) under direct supervision, ensuring data is reviewed and documented prior to release.
• Perform preventative maintenance on equipment, document maintenance appropriately, make minor repairs under supervision, and escalate complex issues to appropriate personnel.
• Document all activities, including preventative maintenance logs, instrument function checks, troubleshooting, and quality control to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Pipette samples and reagents using calibrated and approved devices.
• Record dates of receipt, in-use, and expiration for all reagents, kits, controls, and standards used for assigned assays.
• Troubleshoot simple assay problems and provide suggestions to management as warranted.
• Adhere to standard operating procedures and safety requirements of Labcorp, CLIA, CAP, ICH GCP, and other regulatory bodies.
• Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the student trainee role.

Requirements

• Must be accepted into the Labcorp School of Medical Laboratory Science.
• Completion of all college/university requirements for graduation with a baccalaureate degree.
• Individuals with grade point averages of 2.50–2.75 may apply and will be considered on an individual basis.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

• Science/math and overall cumulative grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
• College/university coursework must include:
  • 16 credit hours of Chemistry (including Biochemistry or Organic Chemistry)
  • 16 credit hours of Biology (including Microbiology with Lab)
  • 1–2 years’ experience with the following courses: Genetics or Molecular Biology, Anatomy/Physiology, Immunology, Statistics
