About the role

Labcorp is seeking an MLS Trainee Student Worker to join the 2026-2027 Medical Laboratory Science Training Program. As an MLS Trainee Student Worker, you will rotate through hospital and non-hospital laboratory settings while learning the theory behind medical laboratory practices. Didactic instruction will be provided virtually, while clinical instruction will occur in-person at clinical base or affiliate locations in Phoenix, AZ; Birmingham, AL; or Indianapolis, IN.

This role supports meaningful work that complements an education in STEM, business, and healthcare disciplines. In addition to didactic and clinical instruction, you will engage in professional development through workshops, leadership speakers, employee resource groups, and panel discussions. Upon completion, you will receive a certificate and be prepared for diverse responsibilities in analysis, clinical decision-making, regulatory compliance, education, and quality assurance.

Please note: Labcorp School of Medical Laboratory Science is seeking NAACLS approval. Students will be eligible to take a national certification examination upon full program accreditation.

Responsibilities

• Attend didactic lectures and successfully complete all coursework in the following areas:
  • Clinical Chemistry

  • Laboratory Operations Management and Education
• Successfully complete clinical rotations and related assignments in:
  • Phlebotomy
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Hematology
  • Urinalysis & Body Fluids
  • Immunohematology
  • Immunology & Molecular Methods
  • Clinical Microbiology
• Demonstrate competency in course materials by obtaining at least 70% on each course examination and an overall 76% or greater course grade.
• Complete all assigned supplemental assignments and attend study sessions in preparation for the national certification examination.
• Engage in professional development workshops and modules to enhance business acumen and professional presence.
• During paid work hours (voluntary, up to 20 hours per week unless approved), assist with and perform duties related to testing, data recording, and result release under the supervision of a qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist. Note: Students are not allowed to independently release patient results.
• Perform assigned clinical laboratory testing accurately and in a timely manner under the technical oversight of a qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist.
• Perform accurate and timely result entry (auto-verification and manual entry) with direct supervision and ensure data is reviewed prior to release.
• Perform preventative maintenance on equipment, document appropriately, and make minor repairs under supervision.
• Document all activities, including preventative maintenance logs, instrument function checks, troubleshooting, and quality control for regulatory compliance.
• Pipette samples and reagents using calibrated and approved devices.
• Record dates of receipt, in use, and expiration for all reagents, kits, controls, and standards.
• Troubleshoot simple assay problems and provide suggestions to management as warranted.
• Adhere to standard operating procedures and safety requirements of Labcorp, CLIA, CAP, ICH GCP, and other regulatory bodies.
• Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the student trainee role.

Requirements

• Must be accepted into the Labcorp School of Medical Laboratory Science.
• Completion of all college/university requirements for graduation with a baccalaureate degree.
• Individuals with grade point averages of 2.50–2.75 may apply and will be considered on an individual basis.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

• Science/math and overall cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
• College/university coursework must include:
  • 16 credit hours of Chemistry (including Biochemistry or Organic Chemistry).
  • 16 credit hours of Biology (including Microbiology with Lab).
  • 1–2 years’ experience with the following courses:
    • Genetics or Molecular Biology
    • Anatomy/Physiology
    • Immunology
    • Statistics

About the Team

• Diagnostic Core Laboratories: Support hundreds of routine and specialty diagnostic tests for conditions such as cancer and chronic kidney disease. Student trainees in Phoenix, Birmingham, and Indianapolis will train in this environment.
• Central Laboratories: Generate more clinical trial data than all other central laboratories combined, covering Immunology, special chemistry, safety testing, genomics, histology, targeted cell isolation, flow cytometry, and microbiology. Student trainees in Indianapolis will train here.
• Hospital Laboratories: Perform complex tests and procedures to help detect, diagnose, and treat diseases, including working with microorganisms, body fluids, chemical and hormonal analysis, and transfusion medicine. Student trainees will rotate through a hospital laboratory to complete rotations not covered in Core or Central laboratories.

Employees scheduled to work less than 20 hours per week, casual, intern, and temporary employees are eligible for the 401(k) plan only. Employees on a 7-on/7-off schedule receive all benefits except PTO or FTO.
