About the role

Exciting opportunity to join the Labcorp 2024-2025 Medical Laboratory Science Training Program as an MLS Trainee Student Worker. Student Workers will be based in Phoenix, AZ; Birmingham, AL; or Indianapolis, IN. As an MLS Trainee, you will rotate through hospital and non-hospital laboratory settings while learning the theory behind medical laboratory practices. Didactic instruction is provided virtually, and clinical instruction is in-person at clinical base or affiliate locations.

This program supports meaningful work that complements STEM, business, and healthcare education. In addition to didactic and clinical instruction, you’ll engage in professional development through workshops, leadership speakers, employee resource groups, and panel discussions. The program prepares you for diverse responsibilities in analysis, clinical decision-making, regulatory compliance, education, and quality assurance. Upon completion, you’ll receive a certificate and be eligible to take a national certification examination once the program achieves NAACLS accreditation.

Responsibilities

Attend didactic lectures and complete coursework in:
- Clinical Chemistry
- Hematology
- Urinalysis & Body Fluids
- Immunohematology
- Immunology & Molecular Methods
- Clinical Microbiology
- Laboratory Operations Management and Education
Successfully complete clinical rotations in:
- Phlebotomy
- Clinical Chemistry
- Hematology
- Urinalysis & Body Fluids
- Immunohematology
- Immunology & Molecular Methods
- Clinical Microbiology
Demonstrate competency by achieving at least 70% on each course examination and an overall grade of 76% or higher.
Complete supplemental assignments and attend study sessions to prepare for the national certification examination.
Engage in professional development workshops and modules.

Paid Work Hours

MLS Trainee Student Workers may work paid hours outside of clinical externship (voluntary, up to 20 hours per week unless approved by the Program Director). Duties include:

Performing assigned clinical laboratory testing under the supervision of a qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist.
Entering results accurately and timely (auto-verification and manual entry), with review by a qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist.
Performing preventative maintenance on equipment, documenting PMs, and making minor repairs under supervision.
Documenting activities such as PM logs, instrument checks, troubleshooting, and quality control for regulatory compliance.
Pipetting samples and reagents using approved devices.
Recording dates for reagents, kits, controls, and standards.
Troubleshooting simple assay problems and providing suggestions to management.
Adhering to Labcorp, CLIA, CAP, ICH GCP, and other regulatory standards.
Other duties as assigned within the scope of the trainee role.

Teams and Training Environments

Diagnostic Core Laboratories: Routine and specialty testing (e.g., cancer, chronic kidney disease). Trainees in Phoenix, Birmingham, and Indianapolis will train here.
Central Laboratories: Clinical trial data generation, including immunology, special chemistry, genomics, histology, flow cytometry, and microbiology. Trainees in Indianapolis will train here.
Hospital Laboratories: Complex tests and procedures for disease detection, diagnosis, and treatment. Trainees will rotate through hospital labs (Labcorp-run or affiliate) to complete rotations not covered in Core or Central labs.
