MLS Technical Specialist

Starting rate: $37.14/hour. ASCP certification and previous microbiology experience strongly preferred. Weekend and holiday availability required.
About the Role
The Technical Specialist is a highly specialized role within specialty areas such as Blood Bank, Chemistry, Cytology, Hematology, Microbiology, Cytometry, and Molecular Diagnostics, requiring a high level of skill. As Testing Personnel defined by CLIA, the Technical Specialist may perform waived and non-waived testing. Under general supervision, they carry out all policies and perform tests in accordance with department standard operating procedures, working independently to ensure accurate results and records.
The role requires a professional level of knowledge to interpret test results used in diagnosis and treatment. As a Technical Supervisor or General Supervisor (per CLIA), the Technical Specialist may oversee training, day-to-day laboratory operations, and reporting of results. The Technical Specialist-Education is responsible for supervising trainees, including Quality Control review, training, and competency assessment of staff.
Responsibilities
- Perform specimen processing, test performance, and reporting of test results, adhering to authorization by the laboratory director.
- Maintain records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are handled identically to patient samples.
- Adhere to quality control policies, documenting all QC activities, instrument calibrations, and maintenance.
- Follow corrective action policies when test systems deviate from established performance levels.
- Identify and address problems affecting test performance or reporting, notifying supervisors as needed.
- Document corrective actions for deviations in test systems.
- Create, document, and maintain training programs, including competency assessments for new procedures.
- Manage the competency review process with supervisors and the Technical Director.
- Review and approve training documentation, ensuring records are maintained in the Media Lab Compass module.
- Assess whether new competency assessments are needed for updated processes.
- Review and update training materials to reflect current lab workflows.
- Develop training procedures for technical staff and students, including those from affiliated programs and the MGB MLS Training Program.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or Laboratory Sciences (required; no experience in lieu of degree).
- Medical Technologist certification (ASCP) preferred.
- 3–5 years of experience in a Specialty Laboratory.

Pay
Pay range: $32.47 – $47.23/hour. Base pay is determined by skills, relevant experience, education, certifications, and other qualifications. Additional compensation may include benefits, differentials, premiums, bonuses, and recognition programs.
