About the role

The Oklahoma Tax Commission’s Audit Services Division is seeking a Mixed Scope Auditor to conduct fair and ethical single-issue and limited-scope audits of various tax returns. The position supports compliance with Oklahoma and Federal tax laws by reviewing financial documents, tax forms, business records, and other relevant materials. Auditors apply tax law using the Internal Revenue Code, Oklahoma’s rules and statutes, and agency procedures to prepare audit reports and recommendations while strictly adhering to confidentiality requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Review Internal Revenue and Oklahoma tax statutes.
  • Provide written and verbal communication and customer service to taxpayers.
  • Create, print, review, and distribute audit correspondence items.
  • Attend mandatory training and compile/submit audit review packets.
  • Ensure taxpayer compliance with Individual Income tax statutes by reviewing and auditing individual income and business tax returns for issues such as federal tax adjustments, underreporting, credit distribution, non-filing, out-of-state income, business income, retirement income, and gambling income.
  • Analyze individual financial records, including income returns, federal adjustments, business returns, internal/external income reports, and OESC data.
  • Ensure compliance with Mixed Beverage (alcohol) tax statutes by reviewing sales tax returns, mixed beverage returns, and bonds to identify non-compliance and filing irregularities.
  • Analyze business financial records, including sales tax and mixed beverage returns, business adjustments, permits, bonds, and ABLE Commission data.
  • Review closed businesses for non-reported or underreported income prior to closure, including sales tax, medical marijuana tax, withholding tax, and other business tax types.
  • Analyze business financial records, exemption data files, withholding reports, medical marijuana reports, and OESC data.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in accounting, finance, business, public administration, or a related field and four years of professional experience in auditing, accounting, finance, or a similar field.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience meeting the above requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite applications.
  • Five or more years of professional experience in auditing, accounting, finance, or a similar field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, public administration, or a related field.

Skills

  • Knowledge of auditing methodology, techniques, and theories, including generally accepted auditing rules and procedures.
  • Understanding of bookkeeping practices, financial statements, ledgers, journals, and reports.
  • Familiarity with federal and state income tax forms and modern computer technology related to accounting systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and excellent customer service.
  • Interpersonal communication and relationship management abilities.
  • Prioritization, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to review and analyze accounting records and business practices.
  • Proficiency in preparing audit reviews, reports, and recommendations.
  • Ability to work independently with expected instruction/supervision.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate computers, keyboards, photocopiers, telephones, calculators, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to see and read computer screens and printed material with or without vision aids.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels with or without aids.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 15 pounds, bend, stoop, climb stairs, walk, and reach.
  • Duties are normally performed in an office environment with a moderate noise level.

Special Requirements

  • Normal work hours: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with minor flexibility as needed.
  • Telework may be required based on agency, division, or section needs.
  • Must be willing and able to work both on-site and remotely from a secure location, typically the applicant’s home.
  • Must have a secure internet connection and a dedicated telephone (landline) or smartphone during scheduled working hours.
  • This position has access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and requires strict adherence to confidentiality standards for all tax information.
