Mill Mechanical Technician
About the role
Rocky Mountain Steel Mills is seeking skilled Mechanical Maintenance Technicians to support maintenance activities in our steel manufacturing facilities. This position is for individuals who have completed an apprenticeship or equivalent training in one of four maintenance crafts and are committed to becoming skilled in all four: Boilermaker, Millwright, Pipefitter, and Welder.
Mechanical Maintenance Technicians install, repair, assemble, and dismantle mechanical equipment throughout the mills, including gearboxes, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, pumps, seals, piping and valves, mechanical power transmission systems, couplings, shaft alignments, lubrication systems, overhead cranes, and other heavy industrial equipment.
Candidates will be placed at the appropriate level based on qualifications: Trainee, Assistant, or Standard.
Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical maintenance, including preventative, predictive, installation, repair, assembly, troubleshooting, and dismantling of equipment.
- Attend and complete all training programs to become skilled in all four crafts (Boilermaker, Millwright, Pipefitter, Welder).
- Work with shop machines, mobile equipment, structures, production equipment, systems, hand/power/measuring tools, prints, drawings, and safety equipment.
- Maintain a safety-first mindset, following safety procedures, PPE requirements, and LOTO procedures.
- Operate overhead cranes as needed.
Requirements
Mill Mechanical Technician – Trainee
- Completed a recognized apprenticeship or possess equivalent experience in at least one of the four trades: Boilermaker, Millwright, Pipefitter, or Welder.
- Valid driver’s license.
Mill Mechanical Technician – Assistant
- Minimum of a two-year associate degree in the applicable field from an accredited institution or 2 years’ experience in the applicable field (as determined by management).
- Valid driver’s license.
Mill Mechanical Technician – Standard
- Completed a recognized apprenticeship or equivalence in one of the four trades and completed training/courses/tests to become skilled in all four trades: Boilermaker, Millwright, Pipefitter, Welder.
- Valid driver’s license.
All Levels
- 1–3 years of experience as a mechanical maintenance technician in heavy industry, manufacturing, or mining.
- Experience with machinery, equipment operations, or a closely related field preferred.
- Trained in overhead crane operations.
- Able to read, understand, and work from mechanical prints, drawings, and schematics.
- Strong troubleshooting, repair, and installation skills.
- Self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision and manage multiple tasks.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with all personnel levels.
- Physically able to climb, walk, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and perform repetitive motions.
- Ability to constantly exert forces up to 50 pounds and frequently exert forces up to 100 pounds to lift, carry, push, and pull.
Pay
$30.60 – $45.00 per hour, with shift differential.
