About the role
The Vermont Military Department is seeking a Military Maintenance Specialist to work primarily at Camp Johnson in Colchester. This role involves maintenance work across multiple trades, grounds maintenance, and potential operation of heavy equipment.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and repair facilities, including carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and heating systems.
- Maintain grounds, roads, and training areas, including snow removal during winter months.
- Operate heavy equipment such as loaders, excavators, dozers, and heavy trucks equipped with plows and wings.
- Adhere to safety procedures while performing construction or repair work on building systems.
- Work independently to complete assignments correctly, safely, and in a timely manner.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors.
- Obtain heavy equipment operation certification (tractors, loaders, excavators, forklifts, etc.) within the first six months of employment.
- Perform duties in all weather conditions, including potential work outside of normal hours, travel, and overnight stays.
Environmental Factors
- Work is performed at military facilities in Vermont, often near or with hazardous materials, including ammunition.
- Exposure to confined spaces, snow removal on runways, and loud noises.
- Must be eligible to obtain and hold a secret security clearance issued by the federal government.
- Physical demands include climbing ladders and lifting equipment/materials weighing up to fifty pounds.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two or more years of experience in building construction, maintenance, or a related field OR one or more years as a Military Maintenance Specialist I.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five or more years of work experience in building construction or maintenance.
- Building trades or vocational education.
- Military experience.
- Previous experience working on a military installation.
- Possession of a CDL License.
Special Requirements
- May require a Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC), issued upon passing a federal background check (Tier 1), including a fingerprint-supported criminal record check. Possession of CAC may be a condition of continued employment.
- Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) may be required for assigned duties.
