About the role
Hmong College Prep Academy (HCPA) is a Title I Charter School serving students through a school-wide plan focused on the needs of at-risk students. The Middle School Social Studies Teacher instructs students in grades 6-8, creating a flexible classroom environment that fosters learning and personal growth. This role supports the Minnesota Graduation and Common Core Standards while implementing district and school goals.
Responsibilities
- Provide instruction in core curriculum areas, utilizing appropriate instructional resources and technologies.
- Support Minnesota Graduation and Common Core Standards; implement district and school goals and objectives.
- Evaluate student performance, promote achievement, and maintain required records and reports.
- Perform classroom management duties, enforce conduct rules, and take disciplinary action when necessary.
- Use differentiated instructional methods and data to ensure student mastery of content and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Promote a welcoming, respectful, and academically challenging learning environment.
- Maintain accurate records, including attendance, grades, assessments, and lesson plans via Schoology and/or PowerSchool.
- Ensure all online class resources are current via Schoology and connect with families through calls, emails, conferences, and school events.
- Foster a social environment that builds trust, respect, friendships, and self-discovery among students.
- Participate in professional development meetings and implement new learning in the classroom.
- Develop and refine instructional strategies based on self-assessment, feedback, and student achievement data.
- Supervise student activities, including bus duty, breakfast/lunch monitoring, and other assigned duties.
- Adhere to the MN Teachers Code of Conduct and support HCPA’s vision, mission, and values.
- Participate in creating a culture of excellence, teamwork, and collaboration among staff, students, and families.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, teachers, and staff.
- Respond promptly and appropriately to the needs of parents, students, and staff while maintaining confidentiality.
Engagement Activities
- Participate in 3 HCPA volunteer activities outside of the traditional school day (e.g., open houses, school dances, prom, concerts).
- Attend required activities such as grade-level parent meetings, fall and spring parent/teacher conferences, and HCPA graduation.
- Engage in additional committees and community opportunities to expand skills and contribute to the school community.
Requirements
- Current MN teaching license in secondary education for grades 6-12 with the appropriate licensure.
- BA or MA in Teaching Licensure, Education, or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of teaching experience.
- Strong skills in classroom presentation and management.
- Knowledge of instructional technologies, research, and trends in teaching and student learning.
- Ability to utilize computer and multimedia technology effectively.
- Knowledge of core curriculum areas, with a strong preference for candidates trained in LETRS or experienced in structured literacy and the science of reading (phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing).
- Knowledge of teaching strategies to meet diverse student needs and abilities.
- Familiarity with multicultural, gender, and disability-fair curriculum concepts.
- Ability to adapt instructional routines and scaffolding for diverse student populations.
- Ability to implement classroom activities fostering problem-solving and critical thinking.
- Ability to plan and implement lessons aligned with district and school goals.
- Ability to evaluate student performance and present feedback to foster higher achievement.
- Commitment to continuous professional growth and goal-setting.
- Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, parents, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to multitask.
- Knowledge of school programs, functions, and procedures.
- Ability to remain calm in emergencies and stressful situations.
- Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment within established guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with children of diverse ethnic backgrounds in an urban school setting.
Other Information
- Unofficial transcripts accepted at hire; official transcripts required within 30 days of start date.
- Formal credential evaluation required for post-secondary education completed outside the United States.
Work Environment
- Duties performed in a multi-level school/classroom environment with elevator access.
- Extensive interaction with children of all ages.
- Possible exposure to loud and noisy environments (e.g., classrooms, cafeterias).
- Requires operation of standard equipment (computer, fax, telephone, copier).
- Fast-paced environment with frequent keyboarding, requiring repetitive motion and rapid eye movements.
- Ability to sit for extended periods, push, reach, or bend.
- May require weekend/evening work and occasional travel.
- Occasional duties may include field trips, outdoor environments (athletic fields, playgrounds), and varying weather conditions.
