Responsibilities
- Instruct students in citizenship and math subject matter specified by state law and administrative regulations.
- Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials aligned with the division's instructional philosophy and Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL).
- Adapt the curriculum to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction based on student needs.
- Evaluate academic and social growth of students, prepare report cards, and maintain records such as attendance reports and checklists.
- Create an orderly classroom environment by establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior.
- Identify and address student needs, collaborating with other professionals to help students overcome learning, health, and attitude issues.
- Communicate regularly with parents and school counselors regarding student progress.
- Supervise students during out-of-classroom activities and participate in faculty committees.
- Administer tests according to division practices and model nondiscriminatory practices.
- Create an effective learning environment through displays, bulletin boards, and activity/learning centers.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.
- Permanent or provisional teaching license from the Virginia Board of Education to teach middle school mathematics.
- Criminal background check and Central Registry of Child Abuse/Neglect check.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, parents, and the public.
- Work schedule: Monday-Friday 7am-2:05pm during the school year (192 days per year), with four hours required after school each month.
- Physical abilities to sit, stand, lift up to 25 pounds, bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
Qualifications
- Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
- Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
