Middle School Math & ELA Tutors

About the role

SmartStart Education is seeking Math and/or ELA tutors to work with small groups of middle school students in Dayton, Ohio. Tutors will provide targeted instruction to students in grades 6‑8 who have been identified as struggling with fundamental Math or ELA skills, working in both push‑in and pull‑out classroom settings.

Responsibilities

• Deliver small‑group Math and/or ELA tutoring (1‑4 students per group) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
• Conduct sessions during the school day from 7:10 AM to 2:10 PM.
• Take daily attendance and monitor student progress using a personal device (mobile phone).
• Adapt to push‑in (in‑class) or pull‑out (outside‑class) service models as needed.
• Maintain punctuality and adhere to the established schedule.

Requirements

• Ability to commute to the designated middle school in Dayton, OH 45417.
• Ability to navigate a school environment, including hallways, classrooms, and stairways throughout the workday.
• Availability to work Tuesdays through Thursdays, 7:10 AM–2:10 PM.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (any field).
• Minimum of one year of teaching or tutoring experience in a school or educational setting.
• Mastery of middle school Math and/or ELA concepts and skills.
• Comprehensive understanding of the unique challenges faced by urban students, including racial, socio‑economic, and cultural disparities.
• Genuine passion and commitment to fostering student success.
• Exemplary punctuality and reliable attendance.
• Proficiency in communication skills for effective interaction with students, colleagues, and stakeholders.

Skills

• Strong subject‑matter expertise in middle school Math and/or ELA.
• Effective communication and interpersonal abilities.
• Ability to work flexibly in both push‑in and pull‑out classroom settings.
• Organizational skills for tracking attendance and progress.

Pay

Salary range: $29.11 – $34.00 per hour.

Schedule

• Work days: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays.
• Hours: 7:10 AM – 2:10 PM.
• Position term: November 3, 2026 through March 16, 2027.
