Reports to: Superintendent and Director of Student Services

Responsibilities

• Organize and conduct identification program of students with potential speech/language difficulties.
• Evaluate speech and language functions.
• Plan the clinical program for students who have been identified as speech/language impaired, speech impaired, and/or students having related disabilities with communication needs (e.g., intellectually disabled).
• Implement the clinical program.
• Comply with State Standards, District Policies, and ASHA Guidelines in the processes of referral, screening, and placement.
• Follow district procedures for screening, pre-intervention, and/or referring students needing a speech/language evaluation.
• Complete comprehensive and appropriate evaluations according to State Standards, District Guidelines, and ASHA Guidelines.
• Provide a complete diagnostic summary report including a summary of evaluation information and educational relevance.
• Complete IEP paperwork in a timely manner.
• Cooperate with the Individualized Education Plan Team, recommending/planning for program services in compliance with State Standards.
• When appropriate, make a referral for further evaluation (district pays).
• Obtain and use diagnostic information:
  • Participate in building committee (e.g., Student Assistance Teams, School Support Team) to provide pre-referral interventions, screening, and/or evaluation referral information.
  • Administer appropriate assessments for each area of suspected speech/language impairment.
  • Demonstrate understanding and use of the principles of diagnostic evaluation and interpretation.
  • Maintain ongoing assessment to verify progress toward established goals.
• Demonstrate program management skills including:
  • Maintain communication with the building faculty.
  • Maintain a physical environment conducive to learning.
  • Develop work schedule(s) to fit the needs of the students, school, and faculty.
  • Report to building principal(s) and Director of Student Support Services.
• Implement Intervention Programs including:
  • Development and maintenance of the instructional component of the IEP related to speech and language.
  • Development of long-range goals and specific objectives.
  • Completion of daily notes for each student in a timely manner.
  • Use of a variety of approaches and materials to address the IEP that are compatible with the student's age, interest, and abilities.
• Attend workshops, in-service training, and staff meetings.
• Screen all pre-k and kindergarten students entering the system.
• Review all outside evaluations and referrals and make recommendations to the Placement Team, of which the Speech/Language Pathologist/Specialist is a member.
• Keep accurate records of active cases as well as those recently discharged from the program.
• Responsible for the annual re-evaluations of each student.
• Provide progress reports in writing quarterly to parents and teachers.
• Act as a resource for teachers and parents who have responsibilities toward students with speech and language issues.
• Follow all other responsibilities as stated in the position description for teachers.
• Compile, submit, and sign off (as appropriate) on required documentation for services provided under the Medicaid to Schools Program.
• Perform other duties/assignments as assigned by the Supervisor of Speech Services and Director of Student Services.

Requirements

• Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology or Communication Disorders
• Licensed in the State of NH as a Speech-Language Pathologist
• ASHA (American Speech-Language Hearing Association) certification, or ability to become ASHA certified
• NH DOE certification as a School Speech-Language Specialist
• Ability to develop responsible and respectful professional relationships with staff
• Multi-tasker who is excellent at time management, motivated, and possesses strong interpersonal and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) issued by ASHA

Working Environment

• Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job, including:
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, and sit
  • Regularly required to see, talk, and hear
  • Regularly required to use hands and a keyboard
  • Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb steps, stoop, kneel, or crouch
• Position can require some degree of physical interaction with students who have difficulty controlling behavior

Schedule

• 185 days per year with a separate contract for Extended School Year (ESY)
• 7.5 hours per day
