Description

The middle school assistant coach is responsible to the athletic director/building principal for the planning, coordinating, and directing of specific athletic activities to which he/she has been assigned.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

  • Establish objectives for the program and develop a plan for their implementation.
  • Coordinate athletic activities that might conflict with the normal school program.
  • Develop vigorous activities that will develop the physique, increase the efficiency of the cardio-vascular system, and contribute to the development of physical skills.
  • Foster self-expression, self-confidence, and self-discipline through physical, emotional, and social experiences.
  • Be knowledgeable of rules, regulations, and policies set forth by the Hammond School Board, the School Administration, the Supervisor of Physical Education and Athletics, the Indiana High School Athletic Association, and the Indiana Lake Shore Conference.
  • Prepare an athletic budget, select, and hire officials, requisition equipment, and supplies, provide team transportation, arrange schedules, and perform other duties necessary for the efficient operation of an athletic program.
  • Follow procedures for caring for injured athletes.
  • Ensure that all participants have had required physical examinations and signed Parent & Physician’s Certificates.
  • Work closely with the school Director of Physical Education and Athletics in checking player eligibility, making out eligibility lists, and sending IHSAA entry lists on time.
  • Develop plans for issuing and receiving play equipment.
  • Develop sound public relations with parents and media personnel.
  • Attend departmental staff meetings, clinics, and other professional growth activities as approved by the principal.
  • Cooperate with other members of the athletic staff in establishing sound rules for conduct, dress, and general appearance.
  • Supervise activities beyond the school day.

Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of the sport being taught.
  • A thorough understanding of the participants: physically, mentally, and emotionally.
  • Skill in the art of teaching the fundamentals of the sport.
  • Desirable character and personality traits.
  • High moral standards.
  • Athletic ability.
  • A thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations which pertain to the instructor's areas of responsibility.
  • Availability to supervise activities beyond the school day.

Employment Information

Personnel are recommended annually by the building principal and approved by the Superintendent. Compensation will be determined by the School City of Hammond agreement. Performance of the job will be evaluated annually.
