Mid to Senior Level Instrumentation & Control Systems Engineer

About the role

Hybrid position based in Hazen and Sawyer’s Nashville, TN office, serving the Midwest team. The Mid- to Senior-Level Instrumentation & Control (I&C) Systems Engineer will lead project-level I&C systems engineering services, mentor and supervise junior staff, and lead water and wastewater projects from planning and design through construction, startup, and commissioning while working directly with clients and multidisciplinary project teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering studies and assessments, prepare technical memoranda and reports (Basis of Design, Preliminary Engineering Reports, alternatives evaluations, etc.).
• Lead development of complete, biddable, cyber‑informed and technically accurate I&C drawings (P&IDs, PFDs, control system/network architecture, control panel layouts, wiring diagrams, installation details, etc.).
• Develop and edit technical specifications for I&C systems, system integration, SCADA, networking, and related work; contribute to Hazen’s master specifications and standard details.
• Participate in site visits, field investigations, client workshops, and project meetings.
• Coordinate I&C designs across engineering disciplines (process/mechanical, electrical, structural, architectural, HVAC, plumbing, site civil) for complete, coordinated design documents.
• Perform quality control reviews of calculations, drawings, specifications, and other technical deliverables for technical accuracy, constructability, consistency, and interdisciplinary coordination.
• Assist with engineering services during construction: review submittals and shop drawings, respond to RFIs, evaluate field conditions, prepare field directives and design clarifications.
• Perform construction‑phase field services: inspect I&C installations, witness equipment/system testing, evaluate contractor work for conformance with contract documents.
• Support startup, testing, and commissioning: functional testing of instrumentation, control systems, PLCs, SCADA, communications networks, and integrated process equipment.
• Develop and review cost estimates for I&C, control system integration, SCADA, communication networks, and related work with Hazen’s cost estimating group.
• Establish and maintain relationships with clients, teaming partners, contractors, and system integrators; support business development; develop project scopes, fee estimates, and proposals.
