Responsibilities
- Support the design of high-voltage substation systems and components in accordance with client standards, industry codes, and project requirements.
- Develop and revise physical substation design deliverables, including general arrangement drawings, electrical layouts, grounding plans, equipment layouts, conduit/cable routing, and bills of material.
- Perform engineering calculations related to grounding, lightning protection, equipment sizing, clearances, cable/conduit sizing, and other substation design requirements.
- Aid in preliminary engineering, detailed design, bid packages, and construction drawing packages for substation projects.
- Cook up with senior engineers, designers, project managers, vendors, and other discipline leads to support project execution.
- Review drawings and design documents for accuracy, constructability, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Support quality control reviews and incorporate feedback from senior engineers and clients.
- Aid in technical documentation, design reports, specifications, and project deliverables.
- Support construction activities by helping respond to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and resolving field-related design questions.
- Participate in project meetings and communicate technical updates clearly with internal teams.
- Travel to client sites, project sites, and field locations as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
- 3-6 years of experience in substation engineering, power delivery, or high-voltage electrical design.
- Hands-on experience with physical substation design, including general arrangements, equipment layouts, grounding, conduit/cable routing, and bills of material.
- Experience supporting high-voltage substation design packages, ideally 69kV and above.
- Understanding of applicable industry codes and standards, including IEEE, NEC, NESC, ANSI, and utility/client standards.
- Experience performing basic engineering calculations and supporting technical design reviews.
- Ability to work within a multi-discipline engineering team and manage assigned deliverables.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with design tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bentley Substation, Autodesk Inventor, ETAP, WinIGS, or similar software.
- FE/EIT certification or PE licensure preferred.
- Utility consulting, EPC, or power delivery consulting experience.
- Experience with 115kV or 230kV substation projects.
- Familiarity with protection and control interfaces, relay panels, SCADA, and substation integration.
- Experience supporting construction drawing packages and responding to RFIs/submittals.
- Interest in growing into a Senior Substation Engineer or Lead Engineer role over time.
