Substation Engineer
About the role
The Federal Power and Energy Team is initiating a search for a Substation Engineer. The ideal candidate will be located in Pensacola, FL. This role supports engineering efforts for substation projects across the US and internationally.
Responsibilities
- Support the Department Manager in achieving department goals, maintaining high-quality standards, and strengthening client relationships.
- Adhere to project schedules, budgets, and quality for assigned projects.
- Support the Department Manager with management of relationships with NAVFAC and USACE.
- Perform detailed design of medium to high voltage substations, including One-line, schematic, and wiring diagrams.
- Perform SCADA and Communications, station physical layouts, sections/elevations, and control enclosure details.
- Manage cable and conduit plans and details, ground grid, foundations, structural plans and details, lightning protection and yard lighting plans.
- Prepare Bills of Materials, perform substation studies and calculations, specify and select substation equipment, provide construction support, and coordinate with other disciplines.
- Work independently with minimal oversight, provide guidance and leadership to junior team members, and adhere to QA/QC standards.
- Write technical documents, use office automation, discipline-specific design software, and manage multiple tasks.
- Apply technical knowledge to solve problems, coordinate with subcontractors, and ensure workplace safety.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- 5+ years of relevant post-education experience as an electrical engineer providing design deliverables for substations.
- Due to client requirements, US citizenship is required.
- Experience in 15kV through 115kV substation design and IEEE/ANSI and UFC standards.
- Direct experience working as a consultant on DOD projects.
- Experience filling the role of electrical engineer for several substation projects occurring concurrently.
- Demonstrated competence and comprehensive knowledge concerning adjacent disciplines such as electrical engineering, P&C, SCADA, and telecom.
- Well-defined specific knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
- Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis, and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek and/or hours.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Engineering preferred.
- Professional Engineering license (PE) preferred.
- 10+ years of experience in substation design preferred.
- Experience up to 230kV substation design preferred.
- Experience managing people on a multi-disciplinary project team preferred.
- Experience with MicroStation (V8 or newer), AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, or Inventor preferred.
Skills
Must understand and adhere to client standards and processes while working individually or within a team. Specifically, the understanding of NAVFAC/USACE processes and procedures as well as conformance to the Unified Facility Criteria (UFC).
