Our Safety Practice is dedicated to advancing fall protection by addressing engineering, procedures, training, and compliance to help clients achieve the highest level of worker safety cost-effectively.

About the role

As a Mid-level Structural Engineer in our Safety practice, you will analyze, design, plan, and create structural components and systems to lead fall protection design projects for LJB clients in our Houston, Texas office.

Responsibilities

  • Document existing conditions to accommodate additions of fall protection systems, including fixed platforms, fall arrest anchorages, and horizontal lifelines.
  • Analyze building components used to support fall protection systems, including structural steel framing, cold-formed steel framing, and cast-in-place concrete.
  • Develop layouts of fall protection systems to address customer needs and coordinate with the existing structure.
  • Prepare calculations detailing engineering design and assist with the preparation of construction documents.
  • Coordinate with design staff to ensure accurate document and drawing production.
  • Perform tasks within Revit and other CAD software to execute assigned engineering tasks.
  • Coordinate projects by communicating with clients regarding project issues and attending meetings.
  • Maintain technical knowledge through training initiatives, including attending seminars, reviewing professional publications, and participating in in-house systems/management training.
  • Travel to various US-based locations (50 to 75% travel, including overnight stays).
  • Understand and apply OSHA/ANSI fall protection standards.
  • Pass background checks, drug tests, and MVR checks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, architectural, or mechanical engineering (structural emphasis preferred).
  • 5+ years of engineering experience, with knowledge and experience in structural engineering projects and fall protection preferred.
  • CAD experience (Revit and Bluebeam preferred).
  • Experience with RAM or other structural analysis software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards such as OSHA 1910 and ANSI Z359.

Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in team settings.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to traverse worksites in various weather conditions and perform duties requiring bending, climbing, stretching, reaching, and leaning.
  • Must meet the weight capacity of design perimeters of fall protection systems (130 to 310 lbs).
  • Understands exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.

Pay

Salary range: $90,000 - $130,000 based on experience, certifications, and regional market standards.
