Microbiology Technician - Food Science Center

About the role

We are looking for a Microbiology Technician at our Food Science Center in Crete, IL. As a trusted partner in public health, you will contribute to making food systems safer, healthier, and more sustainable through a variety of testing and innovative solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Read plates and tubes to determine the number of organisms in samples.
  • Record findings on worksheets for verification and track client and sample numbers on plates.
  • Pipette sample solutions into tubes or plates according to the analysis process.
  • Pour agar into plates or tubes to initiate the growth process.
  • Prepare samples for analysis by recording, weighing, and blending.
  • Collect plates and place them in the incubator for specified time and temperature.
  • Prepare media and broth for pathogen testing as required.
  • Sterilize materials needed for analysis; autoclave plates before discarding.
  • Perform food poisoning, pH, and other analysis tests on samples as requested by clients.
  • Ensure media and materials are prepared for the next testing sequence.
  • Maintain knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) required for job responsibilities.
  • Set up equipment and materials needed for analysis.
  • Support corporate quality and continuous improvement processes.
  • Perform necessary housekeeping duties, keeping work areas and equipment clean and sanitized.
  • Participate in cleaning schedules and maintain retain samples as required.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and support laboratory management in implementing and improving the management system.
  • Perform other related tasks as needed.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Basic knowledge of microbiology to accurately perform testing procedures and obtain results.
  • Basic knowledge of personal computers for data entry and results recording.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies.
  • Planning skills to maintain supplies and ensure timely completion of analysis.

Work Environment

The role is based in a laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control. Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials may occur. Safety equipment such as gloves, laboratory coats, and eyeglasses may be required depending on the testing process. Daily use of an autoclave is expected. The role involves continuous lifting of materials weighing up to 50 pounds and extended periods of standing. The ability to detect slight variations in shades of colors is necessary.

Pay

$20/hour

Schedule

Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM, with rotating weekends and some overtime required.
