Microbiology Technician

Purpose (Objective)
The incumbent's primary objective is to prepare samples for analysis and maintain documentation to facilitate testing procedures.
Main Activities
- Prepare samples for analysis by recording, weighing, and blending
- Write identification onto plates to track client and sample numbers
- Pipette sample solution into tubes or plates according to the analysis process
- Pour agar into plates or tubes to initiate the growth process
- Collect plates and place them in the incubator for the specified time and temperature
- Prepare media and broth for pathogen testing as required
- Maintain knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for job responsibilities
- Set up equipment and materials needed for analysis
- Read plates and tubes to determine the number of organisms in the sample
- Support corporate quality and continuous improvement processes
- Perform necessary housekeeping duties to keep work areas and equipment clean and sanitized
- Participate in the cleaning schedule and maintain retained samples as required
- Adhere to all safety policies
- Support laboratory management in implementing, maintaining, and improving the management system
- Perform other related tasks as needed
Profile (Required Education/Qualification and Professional Background)
A high school diploma and one year of relevant work experience are required. Basic knowledge of science is necessary for accurate testing procedures and obtaining accurate results. A basic knowledge of personal computers is useful for entering testing data and results. A basic understanding of laboratory safety procedures and policies is necessary to ensure a safe working environment. Planning skills are useful for managing supplies and ensuring analysis completion within specified times. Essential skills include time management, attention to detail, analytical skills, knowledge of LIMS, and physical dexterity for manipulating samples.
Work Environment
The incumbent works in a laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control. Exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials may occur. Safety equipment such as gloves, laboratory coats, and eyewear may be required depending on the testing process. Daily use of an autoclave is necessary for completing analysis processes. Extended periods of standing and detecting slight variations in color shades are common.
