Responsibilities

  • Adhere to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
  • Follow established quality control policies and document all corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  • Identify and address problems affecting test performance, either independently or by notifying supervisors.
  • Perform a wide range of microbiology procedures, including high complexity testing in manual and automated methods.
  • Assist in other areas of the department as necessary, demonstrating competency.
  • Perform and document instrument and equipment maintenance daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed.
  • Review and document the accuracy of patient results before release or reporting.
  • Recognize and account for age-specific differences in expected results.
  • Ensure proficiency testing samples are tested similarly to patient samples and collaborate only after reporting results to relevant authorities.
  • May perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on various age groups.
  • Aid in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Comply with department and hospital policies and procedures related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
  • Assume responsibility for the operation of the micro department during shifts, acting as Micro Tech in-charge if supervisor is unavailable.
  • Perform other tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the department manager or director.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a current and valid state Clinical Laboratory Scientist license or limited state Clinical Laboratory Scientist license as a Microbiologist Specialist, depending on state regulations.
  • At least 1 year of microbiology experience or a Microbiologist Specialist preference.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent educational requirements as specified in CLIA (42 CFR 493.1489).

Preferences

  • Experience in a hospital setting.
  • Experience with microbiology automation.
  • Biomerieux microbiology equipment experience.
  • Comfortable with high volumes of samples.

Pay

Reasonable compensation estimate for this role, which includes wages, benefits, and other forms of compensation, is $36.00 to $48.45. The exact starting compensation will be determined at the time of selection, considering factors such as skillset, years of experience, education, credentials, and licensure.
