Major Responsibilities
- Performs all duties of the bench staff in the specialty as determined by site need (i.e., Medical Technologist, Histotechnologist).
- Works with the Supervisor to develop and implement quality control and quality assurance policies and procedures, directly responsible for validation of processes.
- Ensures that work is completed in a safe and efficient manner.
- Maintains laboratory safety practices and corrects hazards that exist.
- Maintains workflow and makes necessary adjustments to complete work in an appropriate time frame.
- Maintains the preventive maintenance program and ensures regulatory compliance standards are met.
- Participates in the inspection process.
- Provides financial evaluations as part of procedures, instrumentation, and/or reagent evaluations.
- If needed, assists the Supervisor with preparation of work schedules, timecards, and attendance functions.
- Aids in the technical staff development, including competency and coaching, correcting performance as needed, coordinating and overseeing student and new staff training.
- Provides technical expertise to any site as needed; provides technical consultation to both internal and external clients.
- Reviews laboratory results and quality control for accuracy and validity. Documents appropriate information for quality assurance/improvement according to established protocol.
- Utilizes all required computer information systems appropriately.
- Aids in improving the quality and efficiency of laboratory procedures, policies, and processes. Assists in writing new technical procedures and policies and revising current procedures.
Minimum Education and Experience Required
- Licenses/Registrations/Certifications Required: Medical Technologist (MT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification. American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) or equivalent.
- Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, or Histotechnology.
- Experience Required: Typically requires 2 years of experience as an instrument key operator.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
- Position involves in-depth knowledge of moderate and/or high complexity testing as defined by CLIA ‘88.
- Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in the use of laboratory computer systems, including use of word processing programs and spreadsheets.
- Thorough knowledge of statistics and ability to apply statistical rules/analysis to laboratory decision-making processes.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to successfully handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Demonstrated organizational ability, attention to detail, and accuracy.
- Ability to work well in stressful situations, maintaining professional composure at all times.
- Ability to consistently handle multi-tasking, meet established deadlines, and recognize assignments that may be delegated.
- Ability to articulate knowledge of topics under discussion.
- Ability to build and support a highly cohesive and functional team.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Frequently required to lift up to 10 lbs. and occasionally required to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to sit, stand or walk most of the workday.
- Will be exposed to the following hazards: mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, radiations, reagents, and infectious agents.
- May be required to wear lab coats, gloves, gowns and eye and face protection as needed.
