About the Role

Performs various duties within the Micro Market and vending machines, including functionality and operation of machines, availability of products, money-changing machines, and payment kiosks. Ensures maintenance and upkeep of machines as required. Sells general merchandise to customers using professional selling techniques and provides service that anticipates and exceeds customer expectations. Operates a motor vehicle throughout the geographical area and on public roads in connection with performance of job duties.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains Exchange-owned machines and Micro Markets daily.
  • Inspects and replenishes products, including sandwiches, cakes, pies, popcorn, salads, fruits, pastry, sodas, yogurt, laundry detergent, and other merchandise.
  • Ensures adherence to product shelf-life dates for perishable items, removes expired or spoiled food, and sanitizes areas.
  • Greets and engages customers to provide sales-related assistance and opinions on available or sought-after merchandise.
  • Assists customers in selecting merchandise and suggests complementary items.
  • Ensures assigned areas are fully stocked and merchandise is neatly arranged.
  • Communicates with supervisors regarding stock additions, deletions, fast/slow-selling merchandise, customer preferences, needs, and problems.
  • Participates in department meetings and exchanges ideas to improve customer service and job performance.
  • Sets up and maintains prices and Exchange-branded visual programs in micro markets and vending machines.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly micro market by sweeping, mopping, cleaning countertops, wiping down coolers, and emptying trash cans.
  • Assists with resetting merchandise in the micro market at least annually to adhere to standards such as product adjacencies, branding, and placement.
  • Operates laptop, tablet, scanner, handheld, or other electronic devices for inventory, receiving, and ordering within the micro market.
  • Assists in relocating and installing new machines, cleans interiors and exteriors, and makes adjustments to food dispensing, liquid dispensing, and coin changer units.
  • Collects money from vending machines, micro market kiosks, or other machines according to schedule. Verifies cash from vendor-owned machines and records information via computerized handheld devices.
  • Prepares Vending Machines Cash Collection Slip (SS 411) with date, type of machine, attendant name, and cash meter readings for non-fully automated locations.
  • Clears coin jams and makes refunds as required.
  • Responsible for inventory control of micro markets, trucks, and routes in both vending and micro market systems.
  • Collects and verifies daily cash receipts from Cash Handling Clerks, prepares Daily Cash Receipt (SS 120), and arranges deposits per established procedures.
  • Purchases coins from the Cashier’s Cage (Navy Exchange) and interacts professionally with customers and coworkers.
  • Adheres to NEX dress code and uniform standards and supports other vending team members.
  • Becomes knowledgeable about merchandise, including proper setup, use, care, and characteristics, and communicates product-related information to customers.
  • Operates a motor vehicle for job duties, loads and unloads merchandise, and maintains a Daily Trip Report.
  • Coordinates preventive maintenance for vehicles (e.g., oil changes, tune-ups, brakes) and ensures proper fuel levels and cleanliness.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license or a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL).
  • Must possess the knowledge and skills necessary to operate a motor vehicle safely.
  • Must pass appropriate background checks (e.g., Federal DOD Security Clearance).
  • Must pass the GSA defensive driving course.

Qualifications

General Experience

One year of progressive responsible clerical, office, or retail sales work demonstrating the ability to interact with customers.

OR

Substitution of Education for General Experience

Half-year of academic study above the high school level may substitute for each 6 months of general experience requirement.

Specialized Experience

One year of progressively responsible experience in retail sales, services, vending, store operations, or warehouse operations.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly lifts and transports moderately heavy objects weighing up to 40 lbs; occasionally handles heavier items with assistance or material handling equipment.
  • Frequent walking, bending, and reaching required.
  • Work is performed both inside and outside, with occasional exposure to bad weather conditions while loading/unloading vehicles.
  • Subject to cuts, bruises, or driving in all types of weather.
