About the role

CAMBA is a community organization providing a wide range of services to over 72,000 individuals and families annually through 180 integrated programs. The MICA Specialist position is located at the Atlantic House Men's Shelter in Brownsville, Brooklyn, which serves 200 MICA men. The majority of these clients are diagnosed with mental illness and some also have chemical addictions.

Responsibilities

  • Aid clients in reducing or stopping their alcohol and other drug use by identifying and referring them to appropriate services both within and outside CAMBA
  • Provide individual counseling on drug and alcohol addiction and related topics such as behavior, educational progress, family dynamics, mental and physical health, housing, personal finances, substance abuse, mental and/or physical trauma
  • Develop and facilitate group counseling sessions on drug and alcohol use and related topics (e.g., psychological education, learning triggers, skill development, maintaining sobriety, etc.)
  • Conduct initial and periodic psychosocial evaluations and assessments of clients’ needs and re-assessments to determine alcohol and other drug use
  • Create and maintain client electronic and paper files
  • In collaboration with clients, develop and revise independent living plans including short-term and long-term goals
  • Aid clients in achieving their goals by identifying barriers, accessing community resources, and referring clients to appropriate services both within and outside CAMBA (e.g., on-site medical services and psychiatric services)
  • Monitor and document clients' progress toward their goals via regularly scheduled face-to-face contacts/sessions using DHS CARES Database
  • Ensure CARES Database is updated to reflect client requests for services (e.g., car fare, appointments, passes, referrals, etc.)
  • Follow up with clients and with referral organizations regarding client contact and progress with referral organizations

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree (M.A.) or CASAC required (Social Work (LMSW or LCSW), Mental Health Counseling (LMHC), Counseling/Guidance, Art Therapy)
  • May be required to become First Aid/CPR certified and certified in overdose prevention
  • Bi-lingual preferred

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a Master’s Degree (M.A.) or CASAC. Other requirements include the ability to become First Aid/CPR certified and certified in overdose prevention. Bi-lingual proficiency is preferred.

Skills

Strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations are essential. Proficiency in computer systems, particularly the DHS CARES Database, is required.

$51,500 - $54,600 annually
