Metrology Manager
About the Role
The Metrology Manager for Pipettes is a vital leadership position within the PCI organization, responsible for delivering excellent services to clients, managing and developing associates, and maintaining the profitability of the business unit. This role reports directly to a Senior Manager, Director, or Vice President and may require 25-50% travel based on project and client needs.
Expectations
- Communication and Engagement with Customer:
- Interface with customers on assigned projects, handling all communication, status reporting, and engagement.
- Serve as the "Account Manager" for specific customers, building relationships with key personnel and communicating opportunities, risks, and trends to PCI management.
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities at existing and potential customers.
- Meet with customer contacts routinely to deliver support, solicit feedback, renew POs, and inform customers of PCI’s service offerings.
- Participate in at least one professional organization (e.g., ISPE, PDA, NCSL, ASQ) to represent PCI as an industry leader.
- Manage and Lead Associates:
- Communicate with and manage associates, providing feedback, conducting performance reviews, preparing development plans, and approving PTO and expense reports.
- Organize and facilitate mentoring for new hires.
- Conduct all activities in accordance with PCI values.
- Manage Risk and Profitability:
- Manage resources, schedules, and associate assignments to maximize labor utilization and profitability.
- Provide timely status reports and updates to customers and PCI management, communicating risks, delays, scope changes, and overruns.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and update resource scheduling to maximize labor utilization and maintain forecasts at least three weeks in advance.
- Re-align schedules through communication with clients, associates, PCI management, and project stakeholders.
- Notify resources and management of schedule changes or breaks in a timely manner.
- Proactively assess project safety concerns and ensure compliance with client and PCI site safety requirements.
- Participate in and host internal and client-specific leadership meetings, providing updates on new services, client expansions, resources, and scheduling issues.
- Provide weekly metric reporting and routine communications with regional leadership to address workload fluctuations.
- Deliver client-specific KPIs, including financial, calibration, and project deliverables.
- Write and submit proposals for existing and potential clients, including resource planning and scope of work.
- Discuss PCI’s service offerings with clients to explore expansion opportunities.
- Engage associates in discussions about their long-term goals and conduct timely performance reviews.
- Manage projects to minimize risk and optimize labor utilization.
- Ensure timesheets are logged accurately, with proper project codes, expenses, and mileage.
- Review vacation requests and ensure adequate resource scheduling.
- Notify the project accounting team of client changes (e.g., billing, contact, calibration, task, and rate codes) weekly.
- Up to 50-75% of work time may be client-billable activities based on business needs.
Requirements
- A four-year degree in Engineering, Life Sciences, or a related technical field (or equivalent military training).
- Six years of instrumentation experience in the pharmaceutical industry or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Leadership experience in client relations.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
Skills
- Strong leadership skills with demonstrated success in client projects and team development.
- Proven ability to support instrument, equipment, and loop calibrations in manufacturing, utilities, and laboratory environments.
- Exceptional Computer Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and project planning software (e.g., MS Project).
- Ability to develop and update PCI policies and procedures, interpret government regulations, and provide training to technicians.
- Ability to assist clients with policy and procedure development and revision.
- Exceptional communication and problem-solving skills with clients and coworkers.
- Ability to develop effective proposals and quotes.
- Strong ability to influence, guide, and resolve conflicts.
- Understanding of financial issues, profit and loss implications, and business case development.
- Active membership in a professional organization (e.g., ISPE, ASQ, PDA) and external certification (e.g., ISA, ASQ) preferred.
