About the role

This challenging and rewarding role will assist in overseeing and inspecting roadway maintenance contracts for all state-maintained roadway and bridge facilities within the 610 Loop in Houston.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Inspects complex maintenance and construction-related work to include hot mix overlay to ensure compliance with safety, laws and regulations, contract specifications and departmental procedures.
  • Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Serves as a lead worker and the related tasks.
  • Trains other employees.
  • Reviews and assists in the development of traffic control plans, coordinates with law enforcement agencies, monitors lane closures at construction sites, documents changes in the traffic control setup and coordinates with the Public Information Officer.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.

Requirements

Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Experience: 4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Class A Commercial Driver’s License.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
