About the role

The Materials Engineer is responsible for working independently with minimal direction, exercising latitude in determining the technical objectives of an assignment. Initiates and thoroughly investigates plant technical problems, researching alternative solutions, conceiving and implementing solutions for the department. Routinely presents findings and recommendations to senior managers and directors and leads group discussions.

Responsibilities

• Communicates with laboratory service customers to define problems.
• Investigates, selects, and performs scientific procedures as required by service requests.
• Applies scientific techniques to interpret and correlate data and recognizes discrepancies in results.
• Effectively communicates the results of scientific investigations along with appropriate conclusions and recommendations through verbal and written reports.
• Acts as a technical liaison between contracted laboratories and operating groups.
• Keeps abreast of new developments in materials science.
• Exercises independent judgment in evaluating and selecting details of work to be performed among technical alternatives.
• Provides liaison and technical support to other disciplines of the laboratory services department.
• Initiates and thoroughly investigates plant technical problems, researches alternative solutions, conceives and implements solutions for the laboratory services department.
• Ensures and maintains safe and healthful working conditions while enforcing safety rules and regulations.
• Establishes and maintains positive professional relationships with customers (internal and external), vendors, and across the enterprise.
• Accurately solves higher-complexity problems in alignment with business needs.
• Supports standardization and continuous improvement through BOE.

Requirements

• Broad training in a related field usually acquired through college or work-related experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering or materials science and engineering preferred.
• 3 years of materials testing and failure analysis in a laboratory setting.
• Work is performed without appreciable direction; exercises latitude in determining technical objectives of an assignment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills; makes presentations and leads group discussions.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations, analyze and interpret data, and make recommendations.

Pay

Expected hiring salary range: $75,400 – $105,290 (salary determined by applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data). This role is eligible to participate in the annual incentive compensation plan.

Schedule

This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site in Colorado. Travel and local commute between Ball locations and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.
