This position supports our NASA customer on the Marshall Engineering Technicians and Trades Support contract (METTS).

About the role

This position is responsible for using established processes to plate, coat, and treat metal items by immersion in a series of chemical or electrolytic solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Adjust solution levels, check solution temperatures, and make routine equipment settings to ensure proper chemical or electrolytic plating results
  • Clean and prepare parts using standard methods such as degreasing, acid pickling, phosphating, oxide coating, and anodizing
  • Set up parts in appropriate holding devices, position them in plating or chemical solutions, and measure plating thickness using micrometers, calipers, and gauges
  • Drain, clean, and refill chemical tanks as needed
  • Perform post-plating treatments, dry and inspect parts for conformance to standards, and follow established procedures for all plating and coating operations
  • Assist higher-level workers with adding chemicals to plating solutions
  • Support NASA operational objectives

Requirements

  • Basic understanding of typical surface treatment solutions
  • Three (3) years' experience in a related field
  • Must meet eligibility for a Public Trust background investigation for government-issued credentials and IT access; must pass a security background check per Redstone Arsenal/MSFC requirements
  • Provide two (2) forms of Federal I9 documents and a REAL ID-compliant identification to gain access to RSA and MSFC (name must match on both forms, be original, and unexpired)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Ability to apply skill in adjusting solution levels
  • Practical knowledge of the reaction between commonly used chemicals and metals and metal alloys
  • Knowledge of set up and proper treatments and processes for the plating of metal parts
  • Skilled in the use of electrolytic and chemical equipment, and standard holding devices and accessories to plate, coat, and treat parts such as bolts, nuts, tools, equipment parts, or other similar metal parts

Work Environment

  • Environmentally controlled, heated and cooled shop area subject to machinery noise
  • Occasional outdoor work
  • Ability to lift up to twenty pounds on an occasional basis
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time
  • May require walking, bending, climbing stairs, and navigating shop/machine work areas
  • Occasional overtime, including second or third shift support for 24/7 onsite or on-call support based on customer needs and contract requirements

Other

  • All positions supporting the METTS III contract are contingent upon successful completion of NASA medical screenings at the beginning of employment and annually thereafter, as determined by the Safety, Health, and Environmental Job Assessment Questionnaire.
