About the role
A Merchandise Handler I executes various core distribution center activities to support the processing, movement, and fulfillment of products and customer orders. This role handles inbound/outload shipments, order picking, packing, inventory movement, and storage while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Perform all assigned tasks to achieve and maintain daily productivity and quality goals.
- Rotate through different departments as necessary to meet business demands.
- Participate in ongoing training regarding technology upgrades, new systems, and operational procedures.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area by disposing of boxes, packing materials, and pallets, ensuring general facility cleanliness.
- Report issues, inventory errors, damage, or location system problems promptly to leadership.
Departmental Duties
- Loading / Unloading: Load and unload trailers manually or using dollies. Build stable pallets and stage unloaded merchandise accurately.
- Packing: Assemble boxes, package merchandise, fill, label, and perform final quality checks on orders to ensure correct packaging standards. Execute brand-specific "gift packaging" services as required.
- Picking: Accurately pick customer orders using automated technologies (voice picking, robotic tools, conveyor systems). Spend extended periods walking and moving across large facility areas to locate products.
- Shipping & Receiving: Verify received and outbound merchandise against manifests/tickets; tally shipments and record overages, shortages, or damages. Confirm inventory using RF scanners, print put away/picking/shipping labels, and liaise with the shipping/receiving office.
- Stocking & Replenishment: Sort, unwrap, unpack, identify, label, and palletize products. Replenish merchandise into designated pick locations using handheld RF equipment.
Requirements
- Communication & Collaboration: Effective communication skills with the ability to work productively in a team environment.
- Detail-Oriented: High level of accuracy and attention to detail when handling, picking, packing, or verifying inventory.
- Safety & Compliance: Maintain strong awareness of loss prevention, security, and safety standards per Company Code of Conduct and policy manuals.
- System Aptitude: Understanding of operational resources, technology, and training materials.
- Language Proficiency: Basic English language proficiency.
Physical and Visual Activities
- Visual Acuity: Constant near and far vision required.
- Movement: Daily standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, twisting, pushing/pulling, and remaining stationary/standing for long periods.
- Lifting Capacity: Ability to regularly move/lift up to 65 lbs. to a height of 3–4 feet (heavier items moved with team assistance). Ability to move furniture/large items up to 300 lbs. using appropriate equipment.
- Equipment & Technology Use: Ability to operate computers, RF scanners, POS/office tools.
Work Environment
Exposure to varying temperatures (hot/cold changes), concrete floors, dust, odors, and potential mechanical, electrical, or chemical hazards standard to a distribution setting.
