About Minds Matter Chicago

Minds Matter Chicago connects driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college, create their future, and change the world. We are looking for college graduates from all types of backgrounds to serve as mentors.

Responsibilities

  • Support students as they grow both personally and academically, helping them build confidence, strengthen their skills, and explore opportunities beyond their immediate surroundings.
  • Partner with schools across Chicago who nominate high-performing sophomores to apply to the program.
  • Complete a selective application process that includes recommendations and an interview.
  • Pair with two mentors who support students over a three-year period, from sophomore through senior years of high school.
  • Work with students in downtown Chicago from September through May on Saturdays, from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m., excluding major holidays and school breaks.
  • Provide support with college applications, scholarships, and financial aid, along with access to career panels, guest speakers, and educational field trips.
  • Participate in a college summer program each summer, building exposure to campus life and preparing students for enrollment in a four-year college.

Requirements

  • College graduates from all types of backgrounds.
  • Able to commit to 2-3 hours per week, including time needed for weekly session/lesson preparation and/or regular communication with your mentee.
  • Able to commit to three years within the program, working with the same student from their sophomore through senior years.
