Melt Shop Operator
About the role
Primarily responsible for maintaining and stocking consumables for the Furnace or Caster, general housekeeping duties (includes 5S and cleaning), assisting other furnace operators as needed and may be responsible for collecting and running slag samples.
Responsibilities
- Unload trucks and stock supplies and/or consumables.
- Operate/stock temperature and sampling device used to take temperatures, oxygen readings and steel samples.
- May also take care of slag pots/pits as needed (i.e clean out pits with shovels, water, et).
- Assist in maintaining refractory (patching or gunning).
- Maintain runner/tap hole.
- Build and add electrodes.
- Record data in production systems.
- Communicate with team members.
Additional responsibilities include performing daily preventative maintenance and maintaining records and inspection on vehicles and mobile equipment, assisting in training of coworkers as needed, operating mobile equipment to transfer product and materials, and performing general 5S activities in the work area.
Requirements
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Ability to read, write, and carry out instructions.
- Specific working knowledge of the steelmaking process and basic math preferred.
- Ability to use simple specifications, dials, and gauges to regulate electricity and water flow.
- Specialized experience in work on electric steel furnace is preferred.
- People/leadership skills and ability to lead by example.
Skills
- Ability to climb stairs, climb ladders, reach, squat, tolerate prolonged standing/walking, balance, bend from trunk, operate mobile equipment, crawl, kneel, and push and pull objects.
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
- Ability to reach, squat, and tolerate prolonged sitting.
- Ability to lift objects of various dimensions and weights.
- Ability to tolerate whole body vibration.
- Ability to operate hand controls with both hands.
- Ability to operate foot pedals with both feet.
- Ability to perform sustained overhead reaching on occasional basis.
- Ability to tolerate extreme ambient temperatures ranging from 0°F to 160°F.
- Ability to tolerate working in cramped quarters and at heights.
- Ability to tolerate a swing shift work schedule.
- Ability to tolerate working in areas where noise levels can reach 120 decibels.
- The desire to learn new roles and grow with the company.
Qualifications
1 year of industrial or manufacturing experience to include operating heavy mobile equipment. Flexibility to work a rotating 12 hr shift, days, nights and weekends.

Pay
Salary $64,000 / year (includes base hourly rate plus scheduled overtime, biweekly production bonus and shift premiums).
