Medication Technician

The Medication Technician provides medication services and direct resident care, assists in maintaining a positive physical and psychosocial environment for residents, and helps with activities of daily living, housekeeping, laundry, and other daily chores.

Responsibilities

• Operate the medication room and provide medication services as directed by the Health Services Director (HSD) in accordance with physician orders, state regulations, and the nurse practice act.
• Process physician medication and treatment orders following state regulations and the nurse practice act.
• Administer and assist with self-administration of routine and non-routine medications per physician orders, state regulations, and the nurse practice act.
• Perform simple treatments and monitor residents as directed by the HSD.
• Maintain accurate records of medication and treatment services, including controlled substances, in each resident’s clinical record.
• Coordinate with pharmacies for medication orders and refills.
• Report all medication errors per policy.
• Report and record changes in resident condition, incidents, and accidents to the HSD, physician, and family members as directed.
• Complete all incident forms.
• Communicate routinely with physicians, pharmacies, outside services, residents, and families regarding medication and care services.
• Provide direct resident care while promoting dignity, independence, and choice; observe residents’ physical and mental conditions and report changes.
• Assist with or provide care services as directed by the resident’s cooperative service plan.
• Greet residents, visitors, and staff courteously, respecting dignity, confidentiality, and individual rights.
• Follow and support community fire safety and infection control practices; report unsafe conditions or equipment.
• Serve meals in the dining room, assist residents at mealtime, provide tray delivery, and help with dining room and kitchen cleanup.
• Assist in lifting, moving, and transporting residents using proper body mechanics or assistive devices.
• Assist with tours, move-ins, move-outs, and transfers; coordinate personal care services and respond to assistance pages promptly.
• Perform First Aid and initiate emergency response procedures per policy and state regulations.
• Properly store medications and equipment; keep the medication room clean and orderly.
• Remove outdated or discontinued medications for return to the pharmacy or disposal per policy.
• Attend and participate in training, in-services, and staff meetings.

• Protect privacy and confidentiality of residents, team members, and company information.
• Maintain a safe and secure working environment and practice safe working habits.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• One or more years of personal care experience with older adults preferred or as required by state regulations.
• State-required medication pass certification or other required certification.
• Completion of state-required delegation and/or training requirements and successful completion of medication pass competency.
• Word processing skills.
• Current CPR certification, First Aid training, and Food Handlers permit as required by state regulations.
• Completion of all state-required trainings as necessary.
• High school diploma or GED, or equivalent knowledge and skills obtained through education, training, and experience.
