About the role

Assist licensed nursing staff by administering daily medications as ordered by the physician in accordance with established nursing standards, facility policies and procedures, and state requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver routine daily oral, inhalation, and topical medications to residents under direct supervision of a licensed nurse unless otherwise allowed by state law.
  • Observe for any adverse drug reactions and report any problems to the nurse.
  • Record medication administration according to company policies and procedures.
  • Follow written or verbal instructions on how to manage medications.
  • Observe residents for changes and document changes in their condition accordingly.
  • Perform tasks associated with medication administration, including vital signs, medication dose calculations, stocking of the medication carts, and removal of discontinued medications.
  • Practice safe handling and storage of medications.
  • Check foods brought into the facility by residents’ family/visitors to ensure they are within the resident’s dietary allowances and report problem areas to the Nurse Supervisor and Dietary Supervisor.
  • Ensure that residents who are unable to call for help are checked frequently.
  • Meet with residents and/or family members as necessary and report problem areas to the Nurse Supervisor.
  • Assist in arranging transportation for discharged residents and ensure they are escorted to the pick-up area.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified nursing assistant.
  • Medication aide certification.
  • Minimum of 1 year of health care industry experience or 2 years’ experience as a medication aide.
  • Good understanding of medical and pharmacological terminology.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
  • Knowledge of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures necessary for providing quality care.
  • Patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.
  • Willingness to seek out new methods and principles and incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
  • Ability to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Physical and Sensory Requirements

  • Ability to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Ability to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Ability to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately.
  • Ability to function independently, with flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.
  • Ability to meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of the facility, which include a medical and physical examination.
  • Ability to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility.
  • Ability to operate office, business, and accounting machines, data processors, word processors, etc.
  • Ability to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of twenty-five pounds.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.

Daily pay grade: $21–$22/hr. Shifts available: 4-hour shifts from 6:30 a.m.–10:30 a.m. or 4:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. Consistent scheduling and PTO available.
