About the Role

A Medical Technologist conducts diagnostic laboratory tests that are important in detecting, analyzing, and treating a wide variety of diseases and medical conditions. A Medical Technologist uses microscopes, chemicals, precision tools, analyzers, and computer equipment to perform tests that provide doctors and patients with detailed information about various conditions, including patient progress and prognosis. This role performs standard laboratory procedures while consistently delivering high-quality patient care and works independently in assigned areas (Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology).

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned analytical testing efficiently and accurately using independent judgment as appropriate.
  • Work independently in assigned laboratory areas (Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology).
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Laboratory Information Systems, including daily operation of Meditech for specimen processing, ordering, resulting, inquiry functions, and troubleshooting.
  • Follow downtime procedures for both short and long-term scenarios.
  • Prioritize work effectively, adhering to STAT protocols and ensuring ER specimens are handled as STAT.
  • Assign appropriate priority to samples and ensure critical and STAT results are called and attended to immediately.
  • Maintain established turnaround times through organized workflow processes.
  • Monitor and maintain quality control (QC), protocols, and procedures, reporting exceptions to management immediately.
  • Assist in problem-solving, troubleshooting, and maintenance, documenting corrective actions.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents used in testing.
  • Monitor refrigerator, freezer, and incubator temperatures, following up on out-of-range readings.
  • Receive, process, and assess the acceptability of specimens, following rejection policies for sub-optimal specimens.
  • Follow send-out procedures when necessary.
  • Participate in continuing education, competencies, in-services, and proficiency testing.
  • Assist in the evaluation of new instruments and methodologies.
  • Prepare for and participate in applicable inspections.
  • Assist with inventory management, including unpacking and storing supplies.
  • Understand and adhere to the Point of Care Management Program and the laboratory’s role in its operation.
  • Ensure accurate patient identification and specimen labeling, following Laboratory Patient Identification Policy and Specimen Re-labeling Policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required by management.

Skills

  • Laboratory Information Systems: Proficient in Meditech for specimen processing, ordering, resulting, and troubleshooting.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to prioritize work, multitask, and maintain workflow efficiency without compromising quality or timeliness.
  • Technical Skills: Knowledge of QC, protocols, and procedures; ability to troubleshoot and perform maintenance; proficiency in analytical testing.
  • Communication: Shares information clearly and accurately; communicates effectively with coworkers, departments, and customers; answers phones professionally and responds promptly to requests.
  • Teamwork: Works collaboratively in a positive manner; assists coworkers and students; exhibits flexibility in assignments and schedule adjustments; accepts constructive criticism.
