Medical Technologist - PRN

Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, a member of Trinity Health, is looking for a part-time Medical Technologist to join our team on a per diem basis. This position requires working every other weekend on the day shift.

About the Role

A Medical Technologist conducts diagnostic laboratory tests that are critical in detecting, analyzing, and treating a wide range of diseases and medical conditions. Using microscopes, chemicals, precision tools, analyzers, and computer equipment, the technologist performs tests that provide doctors and patients with detailed information about various conditions, including patient progress and prognosis. The role involves performing standard laboratory procedures while delivering high-quality patient care and working independently in assigned areas such as Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, and Microbiology.

Responsibilities

• Perform standard laboratory procedures with consistent quality and accuracy.
• Operate and maintain laboratory information systems, including the Meditech lab system for specimen processing, ordering, resulting, inquiry functions, and troubleshooting.
• Follow downtime procedures for both short and long-term system outages.
• Prioritize work efficiently, adhering to the department’s STAT protocol and ensuring ER specimens are handled as STAT.
• Assign appropriate priority to samples and ensure critical and STAT results are called and attended to immediately.
• Understand and manage the entire workflow process for assigned work areas, multitasking without compromising quality or timeliness.
• Maintain and meet established turnaround times through organized work processes.
• Monitor and manage quality control (QC), protocols, and procedures, reporting exceptions to management immediately.
• Assist in problem-solving, troubleshooting, and maintenance, documenting corrective actions as needed.
• Perform assigned analytical testing accurately and efficiently, using independent judgment where appropriate.
• Share and demonstrate technical skills with students, technologists, and technicians.
• Assist management in evaluating new instruments and methodologies.
• Participate in continuing education, competencies, in-services, and proficiency testing.
• Prepare solutions and reagents used in conducting tests.
• Monitor refrigerator, freezer, and incubator temperatures, following up when temperatures are out of range.
• Receive and process all specimens, assessing acceptability and following rejection policies for sub-optimal specimens.
• Follow send-out procedures when necessary.
• Prepare for and participate in all applicable inspections.
• Perform other duties as assigned or required by management.
• Assist with inventory management, including unpacking and storing supplies.
• Understand the Point of Care Management Program and the laboratory’s role in its operation.
• Adhere to the Laboratory Patient Identification Policy and Specimen Re-labeling Policy, ensuring accurate patient identification and specimen labeling.
• Communicate information in a positive, accurate, and detailed manner with co-workers, departments, and customers.
• Answer telephones professionally and promptly, providing clear and concise information.
• Respond to requests in a timely manner, escalating problems or concerns to supervisory personnel as needed.
• Work collaboratively as part of the lab team, assisting co-workers positively and effectively.
• Mentor and inspire student interns to achieve their fullest potential.
• Exhibit flexibility in daily work, adapting to changes in assignments, workflow, training, and policy without complaint.
• Contribute to all areas of the lab, not just scheduled assignments.
• Take initiative to assist co-workers in completing work in a timely manner.
• Follow up on unfinished tasks or difficult problems, developing positive and resourceful solutions.
• Accept and apply constructive criticism to improve performance and patient care.
• Adjust schedule as needed to accommodate staffing and volume trends, providing coverage to meet department needs.
